Chapter 4 - The Poison in the Boardroom

By Thursday morning, the financial markets were in a full-blown panic. Shares of Thorne Enterprises had dropped four percent at the opening bell as rumors of the incident at the St. Jude's charity gala flooded the financial news networks. The media was painting a picture of a marital scandal, completely unaware of the criminal brutality that had actually occurred.

Inside the high-security executive boardroom on the eightieth floor of the Thorne Tower, ten of the city’s most powerful corporate directors sat in tense, anxious silence. At the head of the table sat an empty leather chair, waiting for Marcus.

The double doors clicked open, and Marcus walked in. He hadn't changed out of his clothes from the night before, though he had discarded his tuxedo jacket. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, his eyes bloodshot but razor-sharp, radiating an aura of such intense hostility that several older board members instinctively leaned back.

Behind him walked Thomas Vance and two federal agents in dark suits.

"Marcus, thank goodness," shouted Julian Vance—no relation to Thomas, but the Senior Vice President of European Logistics for Thorne Enterprises. Julian was a polished, silver-tongued executive who had been with the company for five years. "The press is running wild with stories about your wife and Isabella Rossi. We need to issue a public statement immediately denying any corporate instability. The stock is sliding."

Marcus walked slowly to the head of the table, but he didn't sit down. He rested his large hands on the polished mahogany surface, leaning forward until his shadow fell across Julian’s face.

"The stock doesn't matter, Julian," Marcus said smoothly. "What matters is who leaked my wife’s private medical files to the Rossi family."

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before recovering into an expression of offended confusion. "Marcus, what are you implying? We are all devastated by whatever occurred at the hospital, but to suggest someone in this room—"

Marcus threw a thick manila folder onto the center of the table. It slid across the wood, striking Julian’s coffee cup with a loud clink.

"Inside that folder are the digital forensic logs from our primary mainframe," Marcus announced, looking around the room at every single director. "At exactly 8:14 p.m. last night, while the gala was at its peak, an executive encryption key was used to bypass the security wall of the VIP hospital wing. That key belonged to the office of the Senior VP of Logistics."

The room fell into an icy silence. All eyes turned to Julian Vance.

Julian’s face turned a sickening shade of yellow. He began to reach for his briefcase, but before his hand could move three inches, the two federal agents stepped forward, their hands resting firmly on their service weapons.

"Julian Vance," the lead agent said. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, wire tap violations, and accessory to aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily harm to a minor."

"Marcus, listen to me!" Julian shouted as the agents pulled him out of his leather chair, forcing his arms behind his back while the cold click of handcuffs echoed through the boardroom. "Victor Rossi promised me ten percent of the northern shipping lanes! You were holding us back with your ethical reviews! The alliance would have made us trillions!"

"You sold out my wife and my unborn child for ten percent of a shipping lane," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. "Ensure he is placed in the maximum-security holding wing at Plymouth. No bail. No visitors. No phone calls."

As Julian was dragged screaming from the room, Marcus turned back to the remaining board members, who were staring at him in absolute terror.

"Thorne Enterprises is now going to war with the Rossi conglomerate," Marcus announced quietly. "By noon, we liquidate every joint venture we have with them. We recall every loan, we block every port entry they utilize, and we systematically destroy their market value until they are completely erased from this city. If anyone in this room has an issue with that, you have thirty seconds to resign."

Not a single person moved.
