Chapter 5 - The Gala of Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a glittering sea of dark tuxedos, silk gowns, and diamond necklaces. Chicago's most powerful political figures, corporate titans, and media moguls filled the room for the annual Fierro Enterprises Shareholder Gala.

I stood beside Giovanni near the grand entrance, wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue silk dress that draped off my shoulders. My hair was styled in an elegant updo, secured with sapphire pins. But beneath the glamorous exterior, my heart was racing like a war drum.

Giovanni looked magnificent in a bespoke black tuxedo. His hand rested firmly at the small of my back, his presence a towering shield against the dangerous room.

"Remember," Giovanni whispered against my ear, his breath warm against my skin. "You don't need to say a word. Just stay close to me."

Across the ballroom, standing near the main stage, were Victoria Fierro, Marcus Thorne, and his daughter Clarissa. Victoria was holding a glass of champagne, a triumphant, cruel smile playing on her lips. She believed that within the hour, she would present the forged documents to the board members, destroying my reputation and forcing Giovanni to step down as chairman.

Right beside them stood Tyler and Vanessa Brooks. Tyler had managed to secure an invitation through a distant business connection, desperately hoping to see Giovanni fall so his family's debt might be reprieved.

At eight o'clock sharp, Victoria stepped up to the podium on the main stage, tapping her microphone to gather the room's attention.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Victoria announced, her voice echoing clearly through the ballroom speakers. "Before we begin our formal shareholder vote, there is a matter of critical importance regarding the integrity of our leadership that must be addressed."

The room fell quiet. Guests turned toward the stage, sensing the dramatic shift in the air.

Victoria pointed directly at me. "My nephew, Giovanni, recently married a woman named Jessica Hale in secret. What he did not tell the board is that Jessica’s father, Arthur Hale, was a convicted criminal who stole millions from Thorne Financial before fleeing the country twenty-five years ago! The Fierro family cannot allow a woman from a line of thieves to hold influence over our company!"

A wave of shocked whispers rippled through the audience.

Tyler grinned smugly from the side of the stage, while Clarissa Thorne folded her arms, looking down at me with supreme arrogance.

I felt my hands shake, but before panic could take hold, Giovanni stepped forward. He didn't look angry; he looked terrifyingly calm.

"A fascinating story, Aunt Victoria," Giovanni said, his deep voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet room without the need for a microphone. "Except every single word of it is a lie."

Giovanni snapped his fingers.

Suddenly, the massive LED screens behind the main stage—which were supposed to display the company's annual financial reports—flickered and changed.

Instead of financial charts, a video began to play.

It was an audio-visual recording from an interrogation room, dated just three hours ago. On the screen was the former chief financial officer of Thorne Financial, speaking directly to a team of federal prosecutors.

"Marcus Thorne ordered the embezzlement in 1999," the voice echoed through the ballroom speakers, clear as crystal. "Arthur Hale found out. He refused to take a bribe. So Marcus Thorne had him killed and buried in an unmarked site in upper New York, framing Arthur for the missing funds."

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Gasps of horror echoed from every corner. Marcus Thorne’s face turned ghastly white; his champagne glass slipped from his fingers and shattered against the floor. Beside him, Victoria froze, her mouth agape in absolute terror.

"Federal agents are waiting in the lobby, Mr. Thorne," Giovanni announced coldly, stepping toward the stage. "And as for you, Victoria... I have spent the last forty-eight hours purchasing your remaining shares in Fierro Enterprises. You are officially removed from the board of directors. You have one hour to vacate your office."

Federal agents in dark suits pushed through the heavy double doors of the ballroom, moving swiftly to place handcuffs on Marcus Thorne. Clarissa began to scream in outrage as her father was led away in front of the entire Chicago elite.

Tyler Brooks stumbled back against a pillar, his eyes wide with horror as he realized that Giovanni had not only protected me, but had completely annihilated everyone who had ever tried to hurt my family.

Victoria slumped onto a chair on the stage, completely broken, her dreams of power reduced to ashes.

Giovanni turned away from the stage, walking back to where I stood. He reached out, taking my shaking hands in his, his amber eyes filled with deep, profound tenderness.

"It’s over, Jessica," he whispered gently. "Your father's name is cleared. They will never hurt you again."

May you like

Tears streamed down my face—not tears of fear, but of profound relief and overwhelming love. In front of two hundred guests, in the middle of the grandest ballroom in Chicago, I threw my arms around Giovanni’s neck, burying my face against his chest.

He wrapped his arms tightly around my waist, lifting me slightly off the floor, holding me as if I were the most precious thing in the world.
