Chapter 1 - The First Dance

The moment my fingers brushed Giovanni Fierro’s palm, a strange, electric static rippled through the air. His hand was warm, larger than mine, with calluses along the palm that felt like a quiet promise of strength.
He pulled me up gently, taking the weight off my trembling knees. As I stood, my department-store heels suddenly felt lighter. Giovanni guided me away from Table Twelve, away from the shadow of the kitchen doors, and directly onto the polished mahogany dance floor of the Bellmont Grand.
The ballroom was vast, bathed in the gold glare of crystal chandeliers. Around us, two hundred guests moved in slow, rhythmic motion to the orchestra's rendition of a classic waltz. But as Giovanni led me into the center of the room, the rhythm of the evening ruptured.
Whispers caught like dry tinder.
"Is that... Fierro?" a man in a tailor-made tuxedo murmured to his wife, his eyes widening. "Who is she with him?" the woman whispered back, lowering her champagne glass so fast it nearly spilled onto her silk gown. "She isn't Marcus Thorne’s daughter. Who is that girl?"
Giovanni’s left hand settled against the small of my back. The heat of his palm burned through the cheap polyester of my dress, sending a shiver straight up my spine. He pulled me closer—closer than propriety allowed, closer than a stranger ever should—until the lapel of his tailored Italian wool suit brushed my shoulder. He smelled of rain, cedarwood, and something dark and expensive.
"Keep your eyes on me, Jessica," he murmured, his deep, baritone voice vibrating against my ear. "Don't look at the room. Look at me."
I raised my head, meeting his amber eyes. Up close, the scar along his chin gave him a dangerous, rugged edge that contrasted sharply with his flawless posture. "They’re staring," I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Giovanni, everyone in this room is looking at us."
"Good," he said, his expression completely unreadable. "Let them look. A man who hides his wife invites questions. A man who holds her like this invites silence."
He guided me through a seamless, sweeping turn. He moved with effortless grace, commanding my body’s movements without a single awkward step. As we turned, my gaze involuntarily flicked over his shoulder.
Across the dance floor stood Tyler.
My ex-husband’s jaw was dropped so low he looked foolish. The smug, condescending sneer he had worn at Table Twelve was completely erased, replaced by an expression of utter, disbelieving shock. Beside him, Vanessa’s hands had fallen away from her pregnant belly; she was staring at Giovanni with wide, terrified eyes, clutching Tyler’s arm so hard her knuckles turned white.
"Your ex-husband looks like he forgot how to breathe," Giovanni said softly, a ghost of a smirk touching the corner of his lips.
"Who are you?" I breathed, my fingers tightening on his shoulder. "When I mentioned your name, the old man at the next table nearly choked on his steak. My cousin’s wealthy in-laws look terrified of you. Who are you, Giovanni?"
Giovanni didn't answer immediately. He dipped me slightly—a smooth, dramatic drop that drew a quiet gasp from the surrounding guests—before pulling me back against his chest.
"I am the man who is going to make sure Tyler Brooks never looks down on you again," Giovanni said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying certainty. "Tonight, you are not the forgotten sister sitting near the kitchen doors. You are Mrs. Fierro."
Before I could process his words, the music faded to a soft close. The orchestra paused, but no one on the dance floor moved. The air in the ballroom was heavy, thick with tension.
From the edge of the floor, a sharp, metallic voice broke the silence.
"Giovanni."
An older woman stepped forward. She was dressed in an emerald-green velvet gown, adorned with diamonds that could have bought my apartment building twice over. Her eyes were sharp, dark, and filled with icy rage. Beside her stood the elegant brunette Giovanni had mentioned earlier—Clarissa Thorne, the daughter of a real estate tycoon.
"Aunt Victoria," Giovanni said smoothly, turning to face her while keeping one arm firmly wrapped around my waist. He didn't let go of me for a single second.
Victoria Fierro’s eyes swept over me like a laser, scanning my unstyled hair, my simple dress, and my worn shoes. A look of profound disgust flashed across her face. "What is the meaning of this spectacle? Who is this woman?"
Clarissa Thorne stepped forward, her red lips pressed into a thin line. "Giovanni, your aunt told us you were coming alone. She said we were sharing a table tonight."
Giovanni didn't even look at Clarissa. His focus remained entirely on his aunt. "My plans changed, Aunt Victoria. I decided it was time my family met my wife."
A collective, audible gasp echoed through the surrounding crowd.
Victoria’s face paled. "Wife? Have you lost your mind? The Fierro family enterprise does not recognize a secret marriage to a... a commoner! Where is her pedigree? Who are her parents?"
"Her name is Jessica," Giovanni said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous tone that made the air in the room feel cold. "And if you speak to her with that tone again in my presence, Victoria, I will strip your branch of the estate trust before sunrise."
Victoria swallowed hard, stepping back a pace. The absolute authority in Giovanni’s voice was undeniable.
Right at that moment, my mother and my cousin Sandra pushed their way through the crowd, breathless and wide-eyed.
"Jessica!" my mother gasped, looking frantically between me and the imposing man holding me. "What is going on? Who is this gentleman?"
I opened my mouth, a wave of panic washing over me. I was a nurse from Albany, a single mother living paycheck to paycheck. I didn't know how to play this game.
But Giovanni didn't falter. He turned to my mother with a polite, impossibly charming smile.
"You must be Jessica’s mother," Giovanni said smoothly, extending a hand. "I am Giovanni Fierro. I apologize for the secrecy, but your daughter is a difficult woman to persuade. It took me months to convince her to wear my ring."
My mother blinked, utterly stunned. "Your... your ring?"
Giovanni gently took my left hand and lifted it. I froze.
Sometime during our dance, without me even realizing it, Giovanni had slipped a massive, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring onto my ring finger. It was cold, heavy, and brilliantly bright under the crystal chandeliers.
Across the circle of guests, Tyler stared at the ring, his face turning an unsightly shade of pale grey.
"We were planning to announce it properly next month," Giovanni continued softly, looking down at me with an expression of such intense, believable devotion that my breath caught in my throat. "But I couldn't stand seeing my wife sitting near the kitchen doors while lesser men spoke down to her."

He raised my hand to his lips and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to my knuckles, his eyes locked onto mine.
"The play has begun, Jessica," he whispered against my skin, so softly only I could hear. "Don't break character."
