Chapter 3 - The Gold and the Cage

The Fierro estate on Chicago’s North Shore was not a home; it was a fortress carved from limestone and glass. High iron gates swung open silently as the black Maybach rolled up the long, winding drive, flanked by towering oak trees and manicured lawns that stretched down toward the grey waves of Lake Michigan.
In the back seat, five-year-old Lily had her nose pressed firmly against the tinted glass window, her bright blue eyes wide with wonder.
"Mommy," she whispered, her tiny voice echoing in the quiet cabin. "Is this a castle? Is a dragon gonna come out?"
I smoothed down her soft curls, smiling despite the knot of anxiety twisting in my chest. "No dragons, sweetie. Just... a very big house."
Lily was wearing her favorite burgundy dress—the cheap, thrift-store find she had cried about missing the wedding for. When Giovanni’s driver, a tall, soft-spoken man named Marcus, had arrived at my apartment at precisely noon, he hadn't blinked at our two battered suitcases. He had simply loaded them into the trunk with the utmost care, opened the door for us, and offered Lily a velvet box filled with fresh strawberry pastries.
The car came to a stop in the wide circular driveway.
Standing on the grand stone steps was Giovanni.
He had discarded his tuxedo from the night before, wearing a dark grey cashmere sweater and dark trousers. As the driver opened the car door, Giovanni stepped forward, extending a hand to help me out.
"Welcome to Willow House, Jessica," he said softly.
I took his hand, stepping out into the cool autumn air. As soon as Lily scrambled out behind me, she stopped dead in her tracks, staring up at the towering three-story mansion.
Giovanni squatted down so he was at eye level with her. The sharp, intimidating businessman I had seen in the ballroom completely vanished, replaced by a gentle, patient man.
"You must be Lily," Giovanni said, his voice soft and warm. "I’m Giovanni."
Lily looked at him suspiciously, clutching her stuffed bunny tight against her chest. "Are you the man who bought Mommy the big shiny ring?"
I felt my cheeks burn, but Giovanni simply chuckled, a bright, genuine sound. "I am. And I heard you like strawberry pastries."
Lily’s eyes lit up instantly. "I do! Marcus gave me two!"
"There are plenty more inside," Giovanni said, standing up and gesturing toward the open double doors where a line of household staff stood waiting. "Come on in. Your rooms are ready."
As we walked into the grand foyer—a magnificent space featuring a double curved staircase, white marble floors, and a massive chandelier—a middle-aged woman in a crisp suit stepped forward.
"Mr. Fierro," she said formally. "Mrs. Victoria Fierro is waiting in the main drawing room. She arrived twenty minutes ago with Mr. Tyler Brooks and his wife."
I froze in the middle of the marble floor. My blood ran cold.
"Tyler?" I whispered, looking at Giovanni. "What are they doing here?"
Giovanni’s eyes darkened, his jaw tightening into a hard line. "Victoria is trying to call our bluff. She brought your ex-husband here to confront us."
"Giovanni, I can't do this," I said, my voice rising in panic as I reached for Lily’s hand. "Lily is here. I won't let them say awful things in front of my daughter!"
Giovanni stepped closer, placing his hands gently on my shoulders. His touch was grounding, steadying the storm inside me. "Look at me, Jessica. You are not alone anymore. You don't have to fight them by yourself."
He turned to the housekeeper. "Mrs. Gable, please take Lily upstairs to the playroom. Make sure she has everything she needs."
"Right away, sir," Mrs. Gable said warmly, kneeling down to offer Lily her hand. "Come along, little princess. We have a playroom with a giant dollhouse waiting for you."
Lily looked at me for approval. I forced a reassuring smile and nodded. "Go ahead, sweetie. Mommy will be right upstairs in a few minutes."
Once Lily vanished up the grand staircase, Giovanni turned back to me. He reached down, taking my left hand and lacing his fingers through mine.
"Ready?" he asked quietly.
I took a deep, steadying breath, feeling the heavy diamond ring resting against my skin. "Let's go."
Giovanni pushed open the heavy oak doors of the main drawing room.
Inside, sitting on plush velvet sofas, were Victoria Fierro, Tyler, and Vanessa. Tyler looked visibly uncomfortable, adjusting his tie continuously, while Vanessa sat beside him, her hands folded tightly over her pregnant belly. Victoria sat erect, sipping tea from a porcelain cup like a queen awaiting an execution.
When the doors swung open and Giovanni walked in—holding my hand firmly—all three of them turned.
"Giovanni," Victoria said, setting her teacup down with a sharp clink. "I brought some guests who claimed they had urgent information regarding your new 'wife.'"
Tyler stood up, trying to project a sense of authority, but his eyes darted nervously between Giovanni’s imposing frame and our joined hands.
"Jess," Tyler began, his voice tight. "I don't know what kind of game you're playing here, but this is insane. Mr. Fierro’s aunt contacted us this morning. You can't just pretend you're married to one of the richest men in the city!"
I felt a surge of familiar anger rising in my chest, but before I could speak, Giovanni stepped forward, pulling me slightly behind his broad shoulder.
"Mr. Brooks," Giovanni said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You are standing in my home. You are speaking to my wife. Choose your next words very carefully."
Tyler swallowed hard, but Vanessa spoke up from the sofa, her voice dripping with venom. "Mr. Fierro, she's using you! Jessica lives in a tiny apartment, she can barely pay her rent, and she works as a low-level nurse! She came to the wedding last night looking for revenge because Tyler moved on with me!"
"A low-level nurse?" Giovanni repeated softly, his amber eyes locking onto Vanessa with lethal intensity. "My wife works in the pediatric intensive care unit. She spends fourteen hours a day keeping critically ill children alive. What is it that you do, Mrs. Brooks, besides spend your father's allowance?"
Vanessa’s face flushed bright red, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
Victoria slammed her hand on the table. "Enough! Giovanni, this is a disgrace! Look at her background! She has a child from a failed relationship! She has no family wealth, no pedigree—"
"If you mention my stepdaughter again in that tone, Victoria," Giovanni interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so cold it made the air in the room freeze, "I will have security escort you off my property, and you will find your corporate credit cards frozen by noon."
Victoria gasped, rising to her feet, her chest heaving with rage. "You wouldn't dare!"
"Try me," Giovanni said simply.
He walked over to his desk, pulled a thick leather folder from the drawer, and tossed it onto the glass coffee table in front of Tyler.
"What is this?" Tyler asked, his voice trembling.
"That," Giovanni said, leaning back against his desk and crossing his arms, "is the acquisition agreement for Brooks Logistics—your father’s company. As of eight o'clock this morning, Fierro Enterprises holds seventy percent of your family's debt."
Tyler’s face turned ghastly pale. "What... what are you talking about?"
"It means," Giovanni said, every word dropping like a hammer, "that if I hear one more disrespectful word about Jessica, or if either of you ever approach her or her daughter again, I will foreclose on your father’s business by Friday. You will be bankrupt before the weekend."
Tyler looked down at the documents, his hands shaking uncontrollably. He looked at me, his eyes wide with utter terror and disbelief. The man who had mocked my cheap shoes and my apartment twenty-four hours ago was now completely at my mercy.
"Jess... please," Tyler stammered, his voice cracking. "Tell him... tell him not to do this."
I stepped out from behind Giovanni, looking Tyler dead in the eye. For five years, I had carried the pain of his abandonment, the shame of being told I wasn't good enough. But looking at him now—small, cowardly, and desperate—I felt nothing at all.
"You told me last night that I threw away my future, Tyler," I said, my voice cool and steady. "You told me I wasn't good enough. My husband is just making sure you understand how wrong you were."
Giovanni offered a tight, satisfied smile. "Out. All of you."
Without another word, Tyler grabbed Vanessa’s arm and practically dragged her out of the room. Victoria glared at Giovanni with pure hatred, but the fear in her eyes was unmistakable. She gathered her handbag and walked out, slamming the door behind her.
The drawing room fell into a heavy, quiet silence.
I stood in the center of the room, my heart pounding in my chest. I turned to look at Giovanni.
"You bought his father's company?" I whispered.

Giovanni walked over to me, stopping just inches away. He reached out, gently tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
"Nobody hurts my wife, Jessica," he said softly, his thumb lingering against my cheek. "Even if it's just for six months."
