Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the Past

Life at Willow House shifted into a surreal, golden routine over the next two months.
To the outside world, the marriage of Giovanni Fierro to Jessica Hale was the scandal of the decade. Society columns were filled with speculation about the "mystery nurse" who had stolen the heart of Chicago’s most eligible, dangerous bachelor. Photos of us leaving high-end charity galas and private dining rooms flooded the internet—me dressed in custom silk gowns, holding Giovanni’s arm, looking every bit the high-society matriarch.
But inside the walls of the mansion, a different story was unfolding.
Giovanni wasn't the cold, ruthless tyrant the media made him out to be. To Lily, he was simply "Gio"—the tall man who let her ride on his shoulders, who built elaborate fortresses out of sofa cushions in the living room, and who patiently listened to her endless stories about kindergarten.
"Look, Gio!" Lily squealed one evening, running into the grand library wearing a tiny chef's hat. "Mrs. Gable helped me bake chocolate cookies!"
Giovanni, who had been reviewing a stack of high-level merger contracts at his mahogany desk, immediately set his pen down. He lifted Lily into his lap, taking a small, burnt cookie from her plate and taking a big bite with complete seriousness.
"Extremely delicious," Giovanni declared, nodding solemnly. "I think we need to hire you as the head pastry chef of the estate."
Lily giggled happily, hugging his neck tightly before running back out toward the kitchen.
I stood by the doorway, leaning against the frame, watching the scene with a soft ache in my heart. Over the past eight weeks, watching Giovanni care for my daughter had eroded every defense mechanism I had built around my heart. I was falling in love with a man who was only bound to me by a six-month contract.
Giovanni looked up, his amber eyes finding mine. The playful smile on his face faded into something deeper, more intense.
"She’s getting used to living here," he said softly, standing up from his desk and walking over to me.
"We both are," I admitted, looking down at my hands. "It’s going to be hard when... when the six months are over."
Giovanni stopped in front of me. The space between us suddenly felt charged with an unbearable tension. He reached down, taking my left hand, his thumb tracing the diamond ring that had never left my finger.
"Jessica," he began, his voice thick with an emotion he had been suppressing for weeks. "About the contract—"
Before he could finish his sentence, the heavy oak library doors burst open.
Marcus, Giovanni’s head of security, stepped into the room. His face was pale, his tone urgent. "Sir. We have a problem."
Giovanni immediately pulled his hand back, his posture stiffening into high alert. "What is it?"
"It’s Marcus Thorne," security chief Marcus reported, sliding a tablet across the desk. "He’s partnered with your aunt Victoria. They’ve been digging into Jessica’s past in Albany. They found out about her father."
My heart dropped into my stomach. "My father?"
Giovanni looked at me sharply. "What about your father, Jessica?"
"He... he disappeared when I was four," I stammered, my hands trembling. "My mother always told me he abandoned us. I haven't seen him in twenty-five years."
"He didn't abandon you, Mrs. Fierro," the security chief said quietly, pulling up a document on the screen. "Your father was Arthur Hale. He was a high-level accountant for the Thorne Financial Group in the nineties. Twenty-five years ago, he discovered that Marcus Thorne was embezzling millions from public pension funds. Before he could go to the federal authorities, he mysteriously vanished."
I stumbled back, my breath catching in my throat. "What?"
"They silenced him," Giovanni whispered, his eyes widening with realization. A dark, terrifying rage flared in his amber eyes. "Marcus Thorne murdered Arthur Hale to cover up his financial fraud."
"And now," the security chief added, "Thorne and Victoria know that Jessica is Arthur Hale's daughter. They realize that if she stays married to you, your legal team will gain access to her father's old sealed files. They are planning to release a forged document tomorrow accusing Jessica’s father of being the embezzler, framing your family to destroy your credibility before the annual shareholder vote."
I gripped the edge of the desk to steady myself. The quiet, simple life I had known was collapsing into a nightmare of corporate murder and ancient secrets. My father hadn't abandoned me. He had been killed trying to do the right thing.
"Jessica," Giovanni said softly, stepping closer to me, taking both of my cold hands in his. "Look at me."
Tears spilled over my eyelashes as I looked up into his fierce, beautiful eyes.
"They killed my father," I sobbed, the pain of twenty-five years breaking through my chest. "They ruined my mother’s life, and now they're trying to ruin ours."

Giovanni pulled me tightly against his chest, wrapping his broad arms around me, resting his chin against the top of my head.
"I won't let them," Giovanni promised, his voice dripping with an absolute, lethal promise. "Tomorrow is the annual Fierro shareholder gala. Thorne and Victoria think they are going to trap us. But they have no idea what I am willing to do to protect my wife."
