Chapter 10 - THE CLOSING ARGUMENTS

The trial lasted four days.
It wasn't a contest of legal ambiguity; it was a clinical, devastating dismantling of a bully’s life built on lies.
The prosecution presented the St. Jude’s medical reports, the emergency room photographs of Maya’s injuries, the forensic audit of the embezzled trust funds, and the covert financial records proving Daniel’s shell companies.
When I took the stand as the state’s primary investigator and witness, I recounted every detail of the phone call, the storm-driven drive across state lines, and the chilling arrogance Daniel had displayed when I walked into the kitchen and found him sipping bourbon beside a dented refrigerator.
Daniel’s defense attorney tried to paint the incident as a tragic domestic accident, claiming Maya’s cerebral palsy made her prone to unpredictable falls.
But that defense evaporated the moment Agent Miller played the audio recording of the emergency 911 dispatch call—the one where Daniel’s own voice echoed clearly through the phone, shouting, “Who are you calling?!” followed by the sickening sound of impact and Maya’s choked gasp: “He kneed me... my nose...”
The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.
When the foreperson stood up to read the verdict, the courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless silence.
“On the charge of aggravated battery of a vulnerable adult resulting in severe bodily injury: Guilty.”
“On the charge of domestic felony abuse: Guilty.”
May you like
“On the charge of grand larceny and systematic exploitation of state medical trust funds: Guilty on all counts.”
Daniel lowered his head into his hands, his shoulders shaking with impotent rage as the bailiff stepped behind his chair, unlocking the security gate and preparing to lead him away to a maximum-security state penitentiary where no amount of bluster could protect him.
