Chapter 4 - THE RETURN WITH BADGES

The morning sun broke through the grey storm clouds, casting long, fractured shadows across the gravel driveway of our childhood home.

When I pulled my car to a stop, I wasn't alone. Directly behind my bumper sat two marked state police cruisers and an unmarked Ford Explorer carrying Agent Miller and the county sheriff.

The front door opened before I even stepped out of my car.

My mother stood on the porch, wrapped in her silk robe, holding a steaming mug of coffee. Her expression wasn't one of relief or maternal concern; it was a tight, defensive scowl of profound irritation.

“Claire? What is the meaning of this?” my mother snapped, gesturing wildly toward the police cruisers. “Bringing cops to our house at seven in the morning? Do you have any idea how this looks to the neighbors?”

I stepped out of the car, adjusting my blazer, my face an impenetrable mask of absolute coldness.

“It looks like a crime scene, Mother,” I said, my voice cutting through the crisp morning air like a knife.

Before she could retort, Daniel stepped out behind her, wearing a faded flannel shirt and clutching a beer bottle despite the early hour. He let out a loud, mocking laugh, leaning against the doorframe.

“Well, look who decided to bring the entire circus back,” Daniel sneered, taking a slow sip of beer. “What, did you bring your little workplace buddies to cry about a bloody nose? Maya tripped. End of story. Now get off my property before I call my lawyer.”

“It’s not your property, Daniel,” a deep, authoritative voice boomed from behind me.

Agent Marcus Miller stepped forward, flashing a gold shield bearing the seal of the State Attorney General. Beside him, Sheriff Thomas stepped up the porch steps with two deputies holding official legal documents.

“Daniel Evans?” Sheriff Thomas asked, his hand resting near his sidearm.

Daniel’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, though he tried to maintain his bravado. “Yeah? Who’s asking?”

“You are under arrest for aggravated battery of a vulnerable adult, domestic violence resulting in severe bodily injury, and felony financial exploitation of a state-funded medical trust,” Sheriff Thomas recited smoothly, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

Color drained instantly from Daniel’s face. “Are you out of your mind?! That’s my stepdaughter! She’s clumsy! She fell!”

“She didn't fall, Daniel,” I said, walking slowly up the steps until I stood mere inches from him, looking straight into his panicked eyes. “And neither did the forty-two thousand dollars missing from her medical trust account.”
