Chapter 9 - THE ARRAIGNMENT DOCKET

The county courthouse was packed to capacity when Daniel Evans was led into the courtroom in a bright orange jumpsuit, handcuffed at the wrists and waist.

The arrogant swagger that had defined his entire life was completely gone. His hair was uncombed, his skin pasty under the harsh fluorescent lighting of the courtroom, and his shoulders slumped heavily as the bailiff guided him toward the defense table.

He scanned the public gallery, searching for my mother—hoping against hope that she would be sitting there with a checkbook and a tearful defense strategy.

He found empty space. My mother wasn't there.

Instead, sitting in the front row of the gallery, wearing a sharp charcoal suit and holding a leather briefcase stamped with the seal of the Attorney General, was me.

When Daniel caught sight of me, a flash of pure, venomous hatred crossed his face. He leaned toward his court-appointed public defender, whispering something frantic and angry, pointing an accusing finger in my direction.

Judge Arthur Sterling, a veteran jurist known for his zero-tolerance stance on white-collar crime and violent felonies against vulnerable individuals, adjusted his glasses and looked down from the high mahogany bench.

“Mr. Evans,” Judge Sterling announced, his voice echoing cleanly through the wood-paneled room. “You stand charged with aggravated battery of a vulnerable adult resulting in severe bodily injury, felony domestic abuse, and systematic financial exploitation of state-allocated medical trusts totaling over one hundred thousand dollars.”

The public defender stood up, sweating through his collar. “Your Honor, we enter a plea of not guilty, and we request a reasonable bail consideration given my client’s deep community ties—”

“Community ties?” Judge Sterling interrupted sharply, his voice cutting like a razor. “Counselor, your client brutally assaulted a disabled young woman with cerebral palsy—breaking her nose and slamming her into household furniture—while simultaneously looting public medical funds meant for her survival. There are no community ties strong enough to outweigh the public safety threat this defendant represents.”

The judge slammed his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

“Bail is denied. The defendant is remanded to state custody without release pending trial.”
