Chapter 7 - THE FORENSIC AUDIT

By Monday morning, the financial crimes division of the Attorney General’s office had completed a full, comprehensive forensic audit of Daniel Evans’s personal and business accounts.

The findings were worse than even I had anticipated.

Sitting in my office at the state building in the capital, I scrolled through page after page of transaction logs on my dual-monitor setup. Marcus Miller stood behind my chair, resting a hand on the backrest as he reviewed the summary report.

“It wasn't just forty-two thousand dollars,” Marcus said, pointing a finger at a highlighted row on the screen. “Over the past four years, Daniel systematically diverted over one hundred and ten thousand dollars of state-allocated vulnerable adult funding.”

“Where did it go?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at a series of wire transfers routed through a Cayman Islands holding shell.

“Nowhere legitimate,” Marcus repliedgrimly. “High-end sports car lease payments, online gambling debts, private luxury hunting club memberships, and cash withdrawals made at local bars within three miles of the house. While Maya was rationing her physical therapy sessions because the local clinic ‘cost too much,’ Daniel was funding a lifestyle of arrogant leisure on the backs of taxpayers and a disabled young woman.”

I leaned back in my leather chair, letting out a slow, deliberate breath.

“And the domestic assault charges?”

“Filed as a Class C felony due to the permanent physical impairment of the victim’s nasal structure and the use of excessive physical force against a person with mobility impairments,” Marcus stated confidently. “With your testimony, the emergency medical reports from St. Jude’s, and the digital footprint we recovered from his office computer, his defense attorney doesn't even have a leg to stand on.”

“Good,” I said, locking my screen and standing up to grab my jacket. “Because I’m going to visit Maya at the rehabilitation center, and then I’m heading to the county jail to watch his arraignment.”
