Chapter 9 - The Reclaiming of the Throne

Six months after the trial concluded, justice was fully served. Lucas Stephens was sentenced to twelve years in a federal penitentiary for wire fraud, forgery, and grand larceny, with no possibility of parole. Elaine Vance received a heavy sentence of financial restitution and five years of house arrest for her role in the money laundering scheme.

The Pine Ridge mansion was sold, and the entire Aegis Holdings asset portfolio—valued at over forty-five million dollars—was legally transferred into my name alone. I was no longer a "Non-Contributory Spouse." I was one of the wealthiest independent authors in the country.

But the money didn't matter compared to the freedom.

I used a portion of the recovered funds to launch the Margot Stephens Foundation for Financial Literacy, an organization dedicated to helping women protect their assets, understand corporate law, and escape situations of domestic economic abuse.

One beautiful spring evening, my publisher hosted a massive launch party for my newest novel at the New York Public Library. The book was titled “She Doesn't Suspect a Thing.” It had broken every pre-order record in publishing history.

I stood on the grand marble staircase, looking down at hundreds of glittering guests, literary peers, and thousands of fans cheering my name.

As the applause died down, my literary agent handed me a microphone. I looked out at the crowd, feeling a deep, profound warmth in my chest that had nothing to do with validation, and everything to do with self-love.

"For thirty-two years," I spoke into the microphone, my voice clear and unwavering, "I lived in a story written by someone else. I was cast as a minor character in my own life, trained to believe that my voice only mattered when it was confined to pages of fiction. But a woman’s life is not a draft to be edited or erased by a man who is afraid of her strength."

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, many women in the front row weeping openly. I smiled, looking toward the back of the room where Victoria Vance stood, raising a glass of champagne to me.
