Chapter 4 - The Backlash and the Slander

By the next afternoon, Lucas had moved out of the mansion and into a luxury penthouse downtown, but the war was only beginning. A man like Lucas Stephens doesn't surrender quietly; he weaponizes public perception.
I woke up to a barrage of phone calls from my literary agent, Arthur.
"Margot, have you seen the internet?" Arthur gasped, his voice tight with panic. "There’s a massive article circulating on the major publishing blogs. Lucas’s public relations team just dropped a bomb."
I opened my laptop, my hands trembling slightly. The headline read: “The Dark Reality Behind Bestselling Author Margot Stephens: Husband Claims Literary Star Suffers from Severe Dementia, Fabricating Accusations of Theft.”
The article featured a carefully doctored narrative. Lucas had released a statement claiming that my sudden legal actions were the result of late-onset paranoia and cognitive decline. He claimed he had been desperately trying to manage our finances to protect me from my own erratic behavior, and that my "alleged secret documents" were nothing more than the scribblings of a confused mind conflating reality with my own thriller plots.
My phone rang again. It was Lucas.
I answered, my blood boiling. "You are a monster, Lucas."
"I told you not to start a war you couldn't win, Margot," he said, his voice smooth, completely devoid of the panic from the previous night. He sounded smug. "Who is the public going to believe? A respected corporate executive who has managed our pristine reputation for thirty years, or a reclusive fiction writer who spends her days inventing conspiracies? Sign the original settlement papers, give up the Aegis royalties, and I’ll put out a statement saying you’ve recovered. Otherwise, I will have you legally declared incompetent, and I’ll take control of your entire estate anyway."
"You can try, Lucas," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "But you forgot one very important detail."
"Oh? And what’s that?"

"I don't just write plots, Lucas. I research them. I know exactly how to unmask a villain." I slammed the phone down.
I looked at Victoria Vance, who was sitting across my kitchen table. "Victoria, it's time to release the audio."
