Chapter 5 - The Midnight Recording

Lucas had completely forgotten that our entire Pine Ridge mansion was equipped with a state-of-the-art smart-home security system, which I had paid for using my very first book advance. The system didn't just record video outside; it kept a rolling audio log of the common areas and the study for voice-activated commands.
An hour later, a raw, unedited audio file was uploaded directly to my official author page, which had over two million followers.
The audio was crystal clear. It was Lucas’s voice from 2:03 a.m.
"She doesn’t suspect anything... and after she signs, there will be nothing she can do. Margot never reads anything from beginning to end. She always believes me... I allow her to write those little novels so she has something to occupy herself."
The internet exploded. Within three hours, the hashtag #IStandWithMargot was trending worldwide. Millions of women who had felt minimized, gaslit, or financially abused by their partners rallied behind me. The narrative shifted instantly from "confused, aging wife" to "brilliant author traps her narcissistic husband."
Bookstores across the country began setting up massive displays of my novels, branding them as the works of a real-life survivor.

But the final blow came from Lucas’s own corporate board. By 5:00 p.m., the logistics firm he had spent his entire life building issued a public statement: “In light of the deeply disturbing audio recordings and ongoing federal financial investigations involving CEO Lucas Stephens, the Board of Directors has voted to suspend Mr. Stephens indefinitely, effective immediately.”
Lucas was losing his company, his reputation, and his grip on my reality. But a cornered rat is always the most dangerous.
