Chapter 2 - The Signing Ceremony

By 5:30 p.m., the atmospheric tension inside our formal dining room was thick enough to cut with a knife. A sleek, sharp-eyed notary public named Mr. Vance sat at the head of the table, pulling a heavy stamp from his briefcase. Lucas stood beside him, pouring two glasses of expensive scotch, looking like a king on the verge of a historic conquest.
"All right, Margot," Lucas said smoothly, sliding the thick stack of papers across the polished mahogany table toward me. He handed me a heavy gold pen. "Just sign where the yellow arrows are. Page 14, Page 22, and the final affidavit on Page 40. Then we can go out to celebrate our financial security."
I sat down, pulling the documents toward me. I looked at the first page. It was titled “Amended Joint Revocable Trust and Asset Allocation Agreement.”
To the untrained eye, it looked standard. But as I flipped directly to Page 38—ignoring his yellow arrows—I found the hidden clause. It stated that in the event of an irreversible marital separation, all intellectual property, past and future book royalties, and the deed to the Pine Ridge estate would immediately forfeit to Aegis Holdings. An entity I had just discovered belonged solely to Lucas and a woman named Elaine Vance.
Elaine Vance. The sister of his business partner. The woman he had been taking on "executive retreats" to Miami for the last two years.
"Margot, darling, don't overthink it," Lucas urged, his voice losing a fraction of its patience. He leaned over my shoulder, his hand pressing firmly against the back of my chair. "Mr. Vance has a hard stop at six. Just sign."
I turned to the final page. I raised the gold pen. Lucas’s breath hitched in anticipation. He was seconds away from legally erasing me.
Instead of writing my signature, I pressed the tip of the pen firmly into the paper and dragged it downward, tearing a jagged, black line right through the signature block.
Lucas froze. The charming smile vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, terrifying coldness. "What the hell are you doing, Margot?"
"I'm updating my plotline, Lucas," I said calmly, leaning back in my chair and looking him dead in the eye.
Before he could explode, the front doorbell rang.
"I'll get that," I said, standing up smoothly. "It’s probably my guest."
I walked to the front door and opened it to reveal Victoria Vance, a legendary, silver-haired family law attorney known as the 'Velvet Hammer' of the tri-state area. Behind her stood two grim-faced men carrying heavy laptop bags.

"Margot Stephens?" Victoria asked, her voice ringing with absolute authority.
"Yes, Victoria. Thank you for coming," I replied. "Please come into the dining room. My husband was just explaining to me how I never read anything from beginning to end."
