Chapter 6 - The Secret in the Safe

Two weeks later, the forensic accounting team struck gold. They had finally obtained a federal subpoena to open Lucas’s private safety deposit box at the corporate bank downtown.
Victoria and I stood in a private viewing room as the bank manager slid the heavy metal box onto the table.
"Let’s see what else your husband was hiding from the world," Victoria said, donning a pair of latex gloves.
Inside the box were the expected documents—titles to overseas properties, Swiss bank account numbers, and a lavish diamond tennis necklace with a receipt made out to Elaine Vance dated on our thirty-second wedding anniversary.
But at the very bottom of the box lay an old, yellowed file folder labeled “Project Phoenix - 1994.”
I pulled out the documents inside, and as I read through the faded print, my breath caught in my throat. 1994 was the year Lucas’s first company had supposedly hit a massive breakthrough, securing a multi-million-dollar investment from an anonymous European venture capitalist that launched his career.
But according to these original, unredacted banking ledgers, there was no European venture capitalist.
The initial seed capital—the exact five hundred thousand dollars that saved Lucas from bankruptcy and built his entire empire—had been transferred directly from a trust fund established by my late father. A fund that was meant to be released to me on my thirtieth birthday.
Lucas had forged my signature on the release forms three decades ago. He hadn't just stolen my book royalties; he had stolen my entire inheritance to build his empire, and then spent thirty years pretending he was the brilliant patriarch who had rescued me from a simple life.

"This isn't just a divorce anymore, Margot," Victoria whispered, looking at the forged signature under a magnifying glass. "This is grand larceny, forgery, and federal wire fraud. This carries significant prison time."
I looked at the forged signature of my younger self. A profound sense of rage, mixed with absolute clarity, washed over me. "He didn't build anything. I built it. He was just the parasite living off my blood."
