Chapter 8: Echoes in the Dark

The fury that awoke inside Matteo Carbone was not the controlled anger of a businessman; it was the primal, devastating wrath of a father whose child had been ripped away. Within ten minutes, the entire estate was locked down.

Hannah sat on the sofa as Marco bandaged her arm, her eyes burning with a terrifying light. "They used a black delivery van with forged diplomatic plates, Matteo. But before they knocked me down, I managed to drop my silver pendant into the back of the van while they were shoving Lily inside."

Matteo looked at her, astonished. The silver pendant still contained the passive, un-trackable RFID proximity chip his father had installed decades ago for emergency cargo tracking.

"Marco! Activate the old syndicate frequencies!" Matteo commanded. "Track that pendant!"

At 2:00 AM, the signal locked onto an isolated location: an abandoned marble quarry deep in the hills of Carrara, two hours north of Florence. It was a treacherous, ghostly landscape of white stone and deep, dark pits—a place where people disappeared forever.

"I’m coming with you," Hannah said, standing up, ignoring the pain in her ribs.

"It’s too dangerous, Hannah," Matteo said, grabbing his tactical coat.

"She is my daughter, Matteo!" Hannah shouted, her voice echoing through the grand hall. "I didn't cross oceans and face down an empire just to sit in a room while she’s terrified in the dark! I am coming!"

Matteo stared into her fierce, unyielding eyes and saw the woman who had saved his family a year ago. He nodded once. "Load up."

They arrived at the Carrara quarry under the cover of a moonless night. The massive blocks of white marble looked like giant tombstones in the dark. The GPS tracking signal pointed to a rusted metal container office suspended over a deep quarry pit.

Matteo and three of his elite guards advanced through the shadows like phantoms. Hannah followed closely, her heart pounding in her ears.

Through the cracked window of the container office, they saw them. Viktor Russo was pacing back and forth, a heavy pistol tucked into his waistband. Elena Vance sat at a desk, frantically typing on a laptop. And in the corner, tied to a wooden chair, was Lily. Her eyes were wide with terror, her little hands bound so she couldn't even sign for help.

"The billionaire hasn't wired the money yet!" Elena panicked, her sophisticated facade completely gone. "Russo, the police will find us! This was a mistake!"

"Shut up, you fool!" Russo snarled, pulling his gun and pointing it directly at Lily. "Matteo cares more about this little brat than his billions. If he doesn't transfer the offshore accounts by 3:00 AM, I’m throwing her into the pit, and we leave the country."

Lily let out a silent, heartbroken sob, her small body shaking.

From the shadows outside, Hannah saw the gun pointed at her daughter. An overwhelming, maternal instinct overrode all caution. Before Matteo could signal the tactical strike, Hannah grabbed a heavy iron crowbar from a nearby utility rack and smashed the container’s glass window, throwing herself inside.
