Chapter 3: The Threat Emerges

The revelation shattered Hannah’s reality. She collapsed into a leather chair, her fingers clutching the silver pendant against her chest. For fifteen years, she had believed her father was an ordinary man caught in a tragic accident. Now, she realized she was the living blueprint to a mafia war.

"My father... he wanted me to give this to you?" Hannah asked, her voice shaking as she looked up at Matteo.

"He wanted you to survive first," Matteo replied, his tone surprisingly gentle as he knelt slightly to meet her gaze. "He knew that if I found you too early, Harrison’s spies would eliminate you. But last night, when you stepped out of the shadows to protect my daughter using sign language—the very language your father used to communicate with my deaf mother years ago—I knew exactly who you were. The puzzle was complete."

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany door rattled. A loud, frantic knocking broke the silence of the study.

Matteo stood up instantly, his hand moving smoothly to the holstered gun beneath his jacket. He unlocked the door to find his head of security, Marcus, pale and sweating.

"Boss, we have a problem," Marcus reported, his eyes darting to Hannah. "Harrison’s men just breached the outer perimeter gates. They aren't here for a meeting. They brought heavy artillery. They know the Sterling girl is in the house."

Before Matteo could reply, the distant, muffled sound of gunfire echoed through the mansion's thick walls. Alarms began to blare, a high-pitched wail that simulated chaos.

Hannah gasped, her first thought flying to the innocent child down the hall. "Lily! She can't hear the alarms! She doesn't know what's happening!"

Matteo’s face turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. "Marcus! Take the primary security detail and hold the grand foyer. Do not let a single one of Harrison's rats up the stairs."

Matteo grabbed Hannah's arm, pulling her out of the study. "You’re with me. We get Lily, and we get to the safe room."

They sprinted down the long corridor toward the sunroom. When they threw the doors open, Lily was sitting on the floor, coloring, completely oblivious to the violence erupting just floors below her. The nanny was cowering in the corner, paralyzed by fear.

Hannah ran forward, dropping to her knees beside Lily. The little girl looked up, confused by the sudden tension on Hannah's face.

Hannah raised her hands, signing with absolute clarity and calmness, masking her own terror. Lily, look at me. We are playing a game. A hiding game. You must hold my hand and run fast, okay?

Lily's eyes widened, but she nodded, trusting Hannah implicitly. Okay, Hannah. I am fast.

They rushed down the back service stairs toward the basement safe room, Matteo leading the way with his weapon drawn. But as they reached the final corridor, the heavy steel door at the end of the hall splintered outward.

Three armed men stepped through the smoke. At the center stood Harrison Matteo—an older, cruel-looking man with graying hair and a wealthy socialite smirk.

"Well, well, nephew," Harrison sneered, raising an automatic rifle. "You kept the Sterling girl hidden well. But your father's old ledger dies today, along with your pathetic legacy."

One of Harrison's men aimed his weapon directly at Lily.

In a split second, before Matteo could react, Hannah threw her body over Lily, shielding the deaf girl with her own form.

A gunshot rang through the narrow hallway. But it didn't come from Harrison's men. Matteo had moved with impossible speed, firing three precise shots that dropped Harrison’s guards instantly. He advanced like a demon unleashed, tackling his uncle to the ground, disarming him, and pinning him against the concrete floor with a knife to his throat.

"You took my wife, Harrison," Matteo growled, his voice vibrating with a deadly promise as his guards finally flooded the basement, securing the area. "But you will never touch my daughter. And you will never touch Hannah."
