Chapter 5: The Phantom of Florence
The grand opening of the Sterling-Matteo International School was a breathtaking success. Dignitaries, educators, and humanitarians from across Europe gathered in Florence to witness the unveiling of a world-class sanctuary for deaf children. When Lily took the stage to give the welcome speech using fluent Italian Sign Language, her face glowing with confidence, tears welled in Hannah’s eyes. Matteo stood beside Hannah, his arm wrapped tightly around her waist, looking at his daughter with a pride that eclipsed all his past corporate triumphs.
But the peace they had fought so hard to secure was shattered the very next morning.
Matteo was in his private study, coordinating a shipment of medical supplies for his new global logistics branch, when his head of security, Marco, entered without knocking. Marco’s face was deadly pale.
"Boss, we have a security breach at the front gate," Marco whispered, his hand instinctively resting on his suit jacket. "A woman arrived in a private limousine. She bypassed the standard checkpoint by presenting a verified DNA certificate and a European court injunction. She brought a high-profile media crew from Rome."
Matteo’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. The gentle father vanished, and the formidable boss returned in a heartbeat. "Who is she, Marco?"
"She introduces herself as Elena Vance. She claims to be Lily’s biological mother."
Hannah, who had just entered the room carrying a tray of espresso, froze. The ceramic cup rattled against the saucer. Lily’s biological mother had abandoned her at a secluded orphanage in London when she was a mere infant, leaving no name, no record—nothing but a cold note saying the child was "defective" because of her hearing loss.
"Keep Lily in the east wing with her tutor," Matteo ordered Marco, his voice low and lethal. "Do not let her see the cameras." He turned to Hannah, catching her trembling hands. "Stay here, mia cara. I will handle this snake."
"No," Hannah said, her voice shaking but full of fierce determination. "I am her mother now, Matteo. I’m coming with you."
They walked down the grand stone steps of the villa together. Standing outside the iron gates was a woman dressed in an immaculate cream-colored designer suit, her dark hair pulled back into a flawless, severe bun. Behind her, a broadcast journalist was speaking directly into a rolling camera.
As Matteo and Hannah approached, Elena turned to face them, a sharp, calculating smile cutting across her heavily made-up face.
"Matteo Carbone," Elena said, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "And the lovely Hannah Sterling. The internet’s favorite saints."
"You have exactly sixty seconds to get these cameras off my property before my security team destroys the equipment and dumps your crew in the river," Matteo said, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, quiet menace.
Elena signaled the cameraman to pause, though her eyes remained mocking. "There’s no need for violence, Matteo. I’m just a heartbroken, reformed mother who has spent years searching for the daughter that was cruelly stolen from her. I saw the viral videos of my sweet Lily signing at the school opening. Imagine my shock when I realized the billionaire tycoon who 'adopted' her is actually a man with a very dark, very bloody family history."
"Julian’s ledger exposed Harrison, but it also exposed everyone who did business with him," Hannah stepped forward, her eyes burning. "We know who you are, Elena. You didn't search for Lily. You fled to Switzerland to escape Harrison’s creditors. You abandoned a deaf baby because you thought she would be a financial burden."
Elena’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before hardening into pure ice. "What happened eight years ago is irrelevant in a court of law. The fact is, I never legally signed away my parental rights. Now that Matteo has liquidated Harrison’s old assets and placed hundreds of millions into a trust fund under Lily’s name, my daughter is a very wealthy young lady. And as her biological mother, I am filing for full custody and management of her estate."

She held up a legal document, tapping it against her manicured nails. "Let’s see how your new 'legitimate' logistics empire handles a public trial, Matteo. I will drag your family name through the dirt, expose every shadow of your past, and convince a judge that a reformed mafia boss is an unfit father for a disabled child. Unless, of course, you want to settle this quietly for fifty million euros."
"You will not get a single cent," Matteo whispered, stepping so close to the iron gate that Elena instinctively took a step back. "And you will never touch my daughter. Go to the courts, Elena. I will bury you beneath them."
