Chapter 9: The Verdict of the King

The final custody hearing was held in the highest federal court of the state. Because of the kidnapping attempt, the media circus had completely reversed its narrative. The public, which had once questioned Alexander, now viewed him as a heroic father who had literally fought through criminals to save his daughter. The Reeves International stock prices surged to an all-time high, completely obliterating the short-sellers.
The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. Victoria sat in a prison jumpsuit, flanked by public defenders, her high-priced lawyers having abandoned her the moment her bank accounts were permanently seized by the Monaco syndicate.
Sitting in the back row, handcuffed and guarded, was the mole—the head of Alexander’s corporate security detail who had accepted a massive bribe from Victoria’s syndicate. Alexander had personally uncovered the bank transfers the night before.
Judge Marianne Thornton, a legendary and no-nonsense magistrate, banged her gavel to bring the room to order.
"We have reviewed the evidence, the criminal reports, and the verified financial documents," Judge Thornton announced, her sharp eyes scanning the courtroom. "Mrs. Victoria Vance has demonstrated a complete and chilling disregard for the welfare, safety, and psychological stability of the child she claims to love. Her actions are not those of a mother, but of a predatory criminal."
The judge looked down at Clara, who was sitting next to Alexander, holding his hand tightly under the table.
"This court hereby sentences Victoria Vance to twelve years in a federal penitentiary for kidnapping, extortion, and child endangerment," Judge Thornton declared, striking her gavel. "Furthermore, the court rules that all maternal claims are permanently, irrevocably dissolved. Full, unconditional legal guardianship and parental rights of Miss Clara Anderson-Reeves are granted solely to Mr. Alexander Reeves."
The courtroom erupted into a thunderous wave of applause. Miss Ellen wept tears of joy, hugging Jonathan Vance.
Alexander closed his eyes, a deep, heavy weight lifting off his soul. He looked down at Clara. The little girl wasn't looking at the judge, or the crowd, or the flashing cameras of the journalists. She was looking at him, her beautiful blue eyes shining with absolute peace.
She lifted her small hand, showing him the silver sparrow bracelet resting safely on her wrist.

"We won, Daddy," she whispered.
"We won, my princess," Alexander smiled, pulling her into a tight, warm hug that signaled to the entire world that nothing would ever tear them apart again.
