Chapter 7: Deep Waters

The legal battle escalated into a full-scale siege. Victoria filed for an emergency injunction, demanding temporary custody of Clara and immediate suspension of Alexander’s guardianship.

To make matters worse, the media pressure was beginning to affect Reeves International. Activist short-sellers were using the custody scandal to drive down the company's stock, wiping out hundreds of millions in market value in a single week. The board of directors called an emergency meeting, subtly hinting that Alexander should "settle" with Victoria out of court to make the bad publicity go away.

"Settle?" Alexander sneered at the head director during a tense phone call. "You want me to buy off a woman who wants to traffic her own daughter for a reality TV lifestyle and a trust fund? If you mention settling again, I will buy back every single share of this company and fire this entire board by tomorrow morning."

He slammed the phone down. He didn't care about the money. He cared about the little girl who was currently downstairs trying to practice her ballet, her movements heavy and uninspired by the anxiety hanging over the house.

That evening, Jonathan Vance arrived at the estate with a piece of vital information.

"We did a deep dive into Victoria’s life in Europe, Alexander," Jonathan said, pulling out a confidential file. "She didn't just come back because she saw Clara on the news. She was forced to return. She’s deeply in debt to an underground gambling syndicate in Monaco. They’ve frozen her assets abroad, and she owes over ten million dollars to some very dangerous people. If she doesn't get her hands on Clara’s trust fund within the next month, she’s going to prison—or worse."

Alexander stared at the financial records. "So she’s desperate. A desperate snake is the most dangerous kind. She will do anything to win this custody hearing next week."

"There’s more," Jonathan said, his voice dropping. "We traced her local contacts since she arrived in the city. She’s not working alone. Someone inside our circle has been feeding her information about our legal strategy and Clara’s daily schedule."

Alexander’s eyes narrowed into slits. "A mole? Who?"

"We don't know yet. But whoever it is, they have access to your personal schedule. Be careful, Alexander. Victoria isn't just looking for a legal victory. If she thinks she might lose in court, she might try something desperate."

The warning came too late.

Two days later, it was a rainy Thursday afternoon. Alexander was stuck in a mandatory corporate deposition across town. Miss Ellen had taken Clara to her private dance studio inside the city for a closed-door rehearsal, accompanied by two elite Reeves security guards.

At 4:00 PM, Alexander’s phone rang. It was Miss Ellen, her voice hysterical, screaming over the sound of blaring sirens.

"Alexander! They took her! They took Clara!"

Alexander’s heart stopped. The world around him seemed to lose all sound. "What happened, Ellen? Where are the guards?!"

"A delivery van backed into the secure parking garage," Ellen sobbed. "Men with masks pepper-sprayed the guards. Victoria was with them! She grabbed Clara and shoved her into the van! The police are here, but they’re gone, Alexander! They took our baby!"

A primal, terrifying rage exploded inside Alexander. The pen in his hand snapped in half, ink bleeding across his palms like blood. He didn't call the police. He called his private security chief.

"Activate the tracker," Alexander ordered, his voice deathly calm—the silence before a devastating hurricane. "Now."
