Chapter 6: The Media War

By evening, the internet was on fire. Victoria’s tabloid crew had edited the footage, creating a viral, highly sensationalized video titled: “Billionaire Captive: Biological Mother Begs for Return of Orphan Daughter from Tycoon’s Estate.”
The video spread across social media like wildfire. The algorithms fed on the drama, pushing it to millions of feeds. Comment sections erupted. While many defended Alexander’s proven track record of charity, thousands of others began to question the legality of the adoption. “Why did he keep her from her mother?” one viral comment read. “Just because he’s rich doesn't mean he can buy a child,” wrote another.
The toxic shadow of public judgment, which Alexander thought he had permanently erased, had returned to suffocate his home.
The next morning, Alexander called an emergency meeting at the Reeves International headquarters. His legal team, led by Jonathan Vance (no relation to Victoria), sat around a massive glass table, looking grim.
"The paperwork Victoria holds is a real threat, Alexander," Jonathan explained, rubbing his temples. "Julian used a template from the internet eight years ago. Because it wasn't notarized by a certified court clerk of this jurisdiction, a progressive judge might view it as invalid. In the eyes of the family law court, a biological mother almost always takes precedence over a non-relative guardian, unless she is proven unfit."
"She abandoned her for eight years!" Alexander shouted, slamming his fist onto the table, causing the glass to rattle. "How is that not unfit?"
"She’s claiming she was suffering from severe postpartum depression and that Julian forced her to leave under duress," Jonathan sighed. "She’s built a narrative that she’s been searching for Clara for years, but Julian hid her. It’s a lie, but it’s a well-crafted one. She’s hired the most ruthless family law firm in the country."
Just then, Alexander’s phone buzzed. It was a text message from Miss Ellen at the estate.
Sir, Clara saw the news on her iPad. She is inconsolable. Please come home.
Alexander left the boardroom without another word. He pushed past the reporters gathering outside his corporate headquarters, his security detail struggling to keep the cameras away from his face.
When he arrived back at the estate, the house was deathly quiet. He ran up the stairs to Clara’s bedroom. The door was cracked open. Clara was curled up in a tight ball on her canopy bed, clutching the silver sparrow bracelet to her chest, her face soaked with tears. Miss Ellen was sitting beside her, softly stroking her hair.
When Clara saw Alexander, she let out a heartbroken sob and flung herself into his arms.
"Daddy! Don't let her take me!" she cried, her little body trembling violently. "I don't know her! I don't want to go with her! She’s the lady from the video. She called me a 'lucrative asset' on the TV news... Daddy, what does that mean?"
Alexander’s heart broke into a thousand pieces. The pristine, secure world he had built for his princess was fracturing. He held her tighter, burying his face in her golden hair, his own eyes burning with tears.
"Listen to me, Clara," Alexander whispered, his voice steady despite the storm tearing through his chest. "Look at me."
Clara looked up, her blue eyes wide and terrified.
"No one is taking you from this house," Alexander said, placing his hands on her small shoulders. "I don't care about the laws, the news, or the court. You are my daughter. I promised your father I would protect you, and I will protect you until my very last breath. Do you trust me?"

Clara nodded slowly, wiping a tear from her nose. "I trust you, Daddy."
"Good," Alexander said, standing up, a dangerous, cold clarity settling over his mind. "Because Daddy is about to go to war."
