Chapter 5 - Rebuilding the Sanctuary

Over the next few months, Evergreen Manor transformed. The heavy curtains that had kept the house in dark isolation were pulled back, allowing bright sunlight to flood the hallways. The quiet rooms were once again filled with the sounds of life.

While Charlotte attended therapy to process the trauma of her past, her favorite place remained the garden. Together, father and daughter spent every afternoon working side by side in the dirt.

They cleared away the weeds, repaired the stone pathways, and turned the dry, cracked soil into fresh, fertile earth. Robert brought in hundreds of new plants, specifically choosing the colorful varieties Eleanor had loved most.

One afternoon, as they were planting a row of lavender along the main walkway, Charlotte paused and looked at her father.

"Dad?" she asked softly.

It was the first time she had called him that, and the word made Robert’s heart swell with profound joy. "Yes, sweetie?"

"Do you think Mom can see us?"

Robert looked around at the vibrant green sprouts breaking through the earth, then up at the clear blue sky. "I know she can. She’s right here with us, watching every single flower grow."

Charlotte smiled, a bright, radiant smile that completely lit up her face, erasing every trace of the tired, hungry girl who had knocked on his door months ago.
