Chapter 1 - The First Seed of Doubt

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray Seattle clouds, casting a cold, crisp light over Evergreen Manor. Robert Blackwood had not slept. He sat at his desk, surrounded by the yellowed pages of the five-year-old accident report, his coffee cold beside him.

At precisely 9:00 AM, the heavy wrought-iron gate at the edge of the property creaked open. Through his window, Robert saw the small figure walking up the long, winding driveway. It was Emma. She wore the same oversized, threadbare jacket from the night before, but her step was determined.

Robert met her at the back patio, which overlooked the ruined garden. Overgrown brambles, dead rosebushes, and choked soil stretched across three acres.

"It's a big project," Robert said, his voice quiet, searching her face for any trace of the little girl he had lost. "Are you sure you want to do this?"

Emma looked out over the dead land, but she didn't look intimidated. She walked over to a dried-up hydrangea bush, knelt in the dirt, and gently brushed away a layer of dead leaves.

"The roots are still alive," she said, looking up at him with those striking blue eyes. "They're just thirsty and suffocating. My mom used to say that plants are resilient. You just have to give them space to breathe."

"Your mom..." Robert hesitated. "Tell me about her."

"Aunt Margaret says my mom wasn't a good person," Emma whispered, her eyes dropping to the soil. "She says my parents left me behind because they didn't want me. But I don't believe her. I remember... warmth. I remember someone holding me."

Robert felt a sharp pain in his chest. He reached into his pocket, his fingers wrapping around the small silver butterfly bracelet he had retrieved from Charlotte's room the night before. He wanted to show it to her, to ask her if it looked familiar, but his phone rang, shattering the moment.

It was Caroline Barnes, his former assistant.

"Robert," Caroline’s voice came through the speaker, urgent and strained. "I looked into the hospital records from five years ago, just like you asked. Something is very wrong."

Robert walked a few paces away from Emma, keeping his voice low. "What did you find?"

"The doctor on call that night—Dr. Harrison—resigned three weeks after the accident. His personal bank accounts showed a cash deposit of fifty thousand dollars the following day. And Robert... the nurse who logged Charlotte's intake form was Margaret Vance."

Robert’s blood ran cold. "Margaret?"

"Your former housekeeper's sister," Caroline confirmed. "The woman who was fired six months before the crash for stealing."

Robert turned slowly to look at Emma, who was carefully pulling weeds around a choked rosebush, completely unaware of the storm brewing around her. The pieces were starting to align into a terrifying picture. Charlotte hadn't died in that crash. She had been taken.
