Chapter 4 - Unlocking the Past

The following morning, the atmosphere at Evergreen Manor was heavy with anticipation. The police had arrested Dr. Harrison at a bus terminal three hours after his escape. Margaret Vance was in custody, having signed a full confession detailing the entire abduction scheme.

Child Protective Services had been called, but given Robert’s status and the overwhelming DNA evidence processed overnight through an emergency lab, temporary custody was granted to Robert immediately.

Emma arrived at the manor in a state-issued vehicle, accompanied by a social worker. She looked terrified, confused, and overwhelmed by the police officers and legal personnel standing in the driveway.

Robert walked out to meet her alone. He knelt down in front of her on the wet gravel, bringing himself to her eye level.

"Emma," he said gently, his eyes shining with tears he could no longer hold back. "I know you are confused. I know everything feels scary right now."

Emma looked at him, her small lower lip trembling. "Aunt Margaret... the police took her away. They said she isn't my aunt. They said... they said I belong here."

Robert slowly pulled the silver butterfly bracelet from his pocket and held it out in his open palm.

Emma’s eyes widened. She reached out, her small fingers touching the silver metal. A sudden, vivid memory flashed across her face—the smell of rain, a gentle voice singing a lullaby, and a shining silver butterfly resting against a tiny wrist.

"My bracelet..." she whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. "The storybook lady... she gave this to me."

"The storybook lady was your mother, Eleanor," Robert said, his voice choking up. "And your name isn't Emma. It's Charlotte. You are my daughter, Charlotte. I thought I lost you forever."

Emma stared at him for a long, quiet moment. The distant memories, the familiar house, the warm feeling she had felt the night before—all of it clicked into place. She stepped forward and threw her small arms around his neck.

Robert pulled her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her rain-scented hair, weeping openly for the first time in five years.
