The audit team had successfully secured the primary digital assets, locking down the internal servers and transferring administrative ownership credentials back to Aegis Capital’s primary vault. The local county marshals had finished clearing the property, escorting Brendan, Diane, and Jessica out through the front gates and leaving them standing in the cool night air beside their cardboard boxes and towed vehicles.
I stood by the second-floor master balcony, wrapped in my cashmere shawl, looking down at the front driveway.
Brendan was standing in the rain, his designer suit ruined by the damp chill, staring up at the lit window where I stood. He looked smaller than he ever had during our marriage—no longer the untouchable executive of Vertex Global, but a man who had traded his integrity for arrogance and lost everything in the process.
Our eyes met across the dim courtyard.
He didn't yell. He didn't threaten me. He simply turned away, shoulders slumped, and helped his mother into the back of a local taxi that had finally answered their call.
