Chapter 9 - A Seat at the TableTwo months after the garden was planted, the first true family dinner took place in the grand dining room.

In the past, this room had been a sterile, intimidating space reserved for silent holiday meals, formal business gatherings, and strict etiquette lectures delivered by Patricia. The long mahogany table had always felt cold, divided by invisible walls of status and expectation.

Tonight, the table was different.

The heavy formal silver had been replaced by simple, colorful ceramic plates. A vase of fresh sunflowers picked from the backyard sat proudly in the center.

And sitting right at the table, sharing the meal side-by-side with Alejandro and the four boys, was Marisol.

At first, Marisol had resisted. “Mr. Alejandro, I’m the domestic help, it’s not proper for me to—,” she had started protested when Alejandro first set a plate for her.

“Marisol,” Alejandro had interrupted gently, pulling out the chair beside his own. “In this house, there is no ‘help’ and there are no servants. There is only family. And you are the cornerstone of this home. Sit down.”

Now, she sat smiling as Mateo excitedly explained how one of their tomato plants had finally sprouted its first tiny green fruit.

“Dad says we can pick it when it turns red and make a big pizza!” Mateo announced, waving his fork in the air.

“Only if we wash our hands first,” Marisol laughed, gently guiding his hand down.

Nicholas, sitting quietly to Alejandro’s left, reached out and tugged on his father’s sleeve. Alejandro immediately leaned down, giving his full, undivided attention.

“Dad?” Nicholas whispered loudly.

“Yes, buddy?”

“Are you staying home tomorrow?”

Alejandro smiled, wrapping a strong, protective arm around his son’s small shoulders. He looked around the table—at his four bright, happy sons, at the warm light reflecting off the sunflowers, and at Marisol, whose presence had brought warmth and life back into the dark corners of his soul.

“I’m not going anywhere, buddy,” Alejandro promised, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. “I’m right here.”
