Chapter 5 - The Audit BeginsBy 9:00 PM, the dining room of the Morrison estate looked less like a high-society dinner party and more like a crime scene investigation.

Two corporate auditors from Arthur’s legal team had arrived with encrypted laptops, setting up makeshift workstations right on the mahogany table where Diane had poured her wine. They weren't wasting a single second. Every corporate server log, every expense account receipt from the last five years, and every fraudulent acquisition Brendan had pushed through under his executive mandate was being pulled into a centralized database for forensic review.

“Item thirty-four,” one auditor announced clearly, not looking up from his screen. “Brendan Morrison authorized a three-million-dollar shell-company transfer to a private offshore account in the Caymans last November, disguised as a marketing acquisition.”

Brendan, who was sitting slumped on a velvet bench near the foyer with his head in his hands, flinched violently at the words.

“That was a legitimate business expense,” Brendan muttered hoarsely, without looking up. “The board approved it.”

“The board didn't approve it, Mr. Morrison,” Arthur said, walking into the room carrying a thick leather binder. He looked immaculate in his tailored gray suit, completely untouched by the chaos around him. He stopped beside me, offering me a warm, protective smile and a dry cashmere shawl, which I draped gratefully over my shivering shoulders. “The board didn't even know it existed until we pulled the shadow ledgers ten minutes ago. Embezzlement of corporate funds under false executive pretenses carries a federal prison sentence of up to fifteen years. Especially when it involves publicly traded subsidiary assets.”

Diane whipped her head around, her eyes bloodshot and furious. She pointed a trembling finger at Arthur. “You! You’re just her lapdog! You’ve been helping her conspire against this family from the shadows! We’ll sue you! We’ll strip your license!”

“Mrs. Morrison,” Arthur replied with terrifying politeness, “my license is pristine. Yours, however, is about to be the subject of a federal tax evasion probe. According to our preliminary findings, you’ve been writing off your personal personal shopping sprees, your country club memberships, and your private art collection as corporate ‘research and development’ expenses for the last seven years.”

Diane’s jaw went slack. The fight completely drained out of her, leaving her looking like an old, tired woman who had finally realized her fortress was built entirely on sand.

I walked over to the grand floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the illuminated front driveway. Outside, two black towing trucks were already winching Brendan’s sports car and Jessica’s luxury SUV onto flatbeds. Their personal belongings were being packed into large cardboard boxes by the security team and stacked neatly beside the front gates in the rain.

Poetic justice didn't always happen overnight. Sometimes, it required patience, silence, and the strength to endure the cold while you waited for the right moment to turn the tables.
