Chapter 8 - The Trap at the Docks

The peace inside the library, however, was about to collide violently with the harsh realities of the Chicago underworld.
At 3:15 a.m., red emergency strobes flashed silently across the security monitors in the Vault.
Marco Bellini stood over the main tactical console as three separate tracking markers lit up along the northern shipping terminals. "Boss," Marco spoke into the encrypted comm-link connecting directly to Alessandro’s private quarters. "Vincenzo’s main strike force just hit Terminal Four. They’re trying to burn our primary container cache."
On the secure line, there was a brief pause before Alessandro’s cold, steady voice came through. "Deploy the rapid-response unit. Box them in against the dry dock. I want Vincenzo’s capos alive."
"Understood. And the estate?"
"Maintain double perimeter watch," Alessandro ordered. "I’m heading down to the docks myself."
Thirty minutes later, the cold Chicago fog hung thick over Terminal Four as a fleet of unmarked black SUVs slid silently onto the concrete aprons.
Vincenzo’s men—twenty hardened enforcers armed with automatic carbines—thought they were executing a successful sabotage raid. They had poured accelerant along the base of the container stacks and were preparing to ignite the shipment when the high-beam headlights of twelve Moretti vehicles snapped on simultaneously, blinding them in a wall of stark, white glare.
"Federal—no, Moretti!" a voice screamed from the shadows.
Before the saboteurs could raise their weapons, automated flash-bangs detonated across the tarmac, filling the night with deafening concussive blasts and blinding white smoke.
From the lead SUV stepped Alessandro Moretti.
He didn't run. He walked with slow, measured steps through the swirling fog, his dark overcoat billowing behind him like the wings of a predator. Behind him, fifty armed enforcers moved in a synchronized tactical sweep, cutting off every possible escape route.
Vincenzo’s lead captain—a scarred brute named Rico—stumbled backward out of the smoke, raising his pistol with shaking hands.
"Moretti! Stay back or I blow the cache!" Rico roared, his finger whitening on the trigger.
Alessandro stopped ten feet away. He raised his own weapon with effortless precision, the barrel locked directly onto the center of Rico’s forehead.
"You crossed state lines, you targeted my shipping lanes, and you sent hitmen into my residence," Alessandro said, his voice cutting through the damp air like a razor. "You have three seconds to drop the detonator, Rico. Not four."
Rico looked into Alessandro’s eyes and saw absolute, unyielding death.
The detonator slipped from the brute’s trembling fingers, clattering uselessly against the concrete.
Within seconds, the entire strike force was disarmed, zip-tied, and loaded onto transport trucks. The battle for the North Side was over before it truly began.
As Alessandro climbed back into his vehicle, wiping a speck of soot from his sleeve, his phone buzzed. It wasn't Marco reporting on the arrests.
It was a text from Sophia:
“Bruno woke up restless. He’s standing by the east door, whining. He won't let us sleep. Is everything alright out there?”

Alessandro stared at the message, a strange, protective warmth settling over his chest. He typed a quick reply:
“Everything is secure. Tell the dog I’m coming home.”
