Chapter 5 - The Master Suite Sanctuary

The main residence of the Moretti estate was a labyrinth of vaulted ceilings, priceless Italian art, and bulletproof glass. But to Sophia Carter, walking through the arched double doors of the master east wing felt less like entering a sanctuary and more like walking onto a battlefield.

She stood in the center of a guest suite larger than her entire apartment in Ohio, clutching a canvas duffel bag to her chest while two armed guards stood rigidly outside the corridor doors.

On a massive velvet chaise lounge in the corner, Bruno lay stretched out, resting his bandaged leg while Dr. Richard Hale finished wrapping a sterile dressing around his shoulder. The dog was exhausted, his breathing heavy, but his eyes remained alert, tracking every movement Sophia made.

"He’ll live," Dr. Hale announced, wiping his hands with a sanitary cloth and standing up with a tired groan. "Though heaven knows how. Adrenaline is the only thing keeping those old joints moving after a physical exertion like that. He shouldn't be jumping, he shouldn't be running, and he certainly shouldn't be fighting armed mercenaries."

"He was protecting Emma," Sophia said softly, her voice still trembling from the morning's violence.

"I know," Richard sighed, glancing toward the adjoining room where Emma was currently sitting on the floor with a coloring book, completely unfazed by the morning's shootout, humming her little wandering tune while coloring a purple cat. "That dog has chosen his side, Mrs. Carter. And in this house, when Bruno chooses, nobody argues."

The door to the suite opened silently, and Alessandro walked in.

He had changed into a fresh charcoal-gray suit, his tie neatly knotted, though the faint smell of gunpowder still lingered faintly on his skin. He walked straight past Richard, stopping a few feet from Sophia.

"The men who breached your quarters have been dealt with," Alessandro said quietly, his voice devoid of emotion. "Vincenzo sent a message. We sent one back. It won't happen again."

"Thank you, Mr. Moretti," Sophia whispered, looking down at the carpet. "If we're... if we're a liability to you, if we’re drawing fire to your estate—just give us train fare. We can go back to Ohio. We can disappear."

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. He took a half-step closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch.

"You are not going anywhere, Sophia," he said, his voice dropping an octave. "You think you can just pack a bag and vanish into Ohio after my dog adopted your daughter? You think Vincenzo’s men won't hunt down every loose end in the Midwest?"

"Then what do you want from us?" Sophia cried out, the accumulated terror of the past twenty-four hours finally breaking through her professional composure. "Why are you keeping us here? We're just housekeepers! We don't belong in this world!"

Before Alessandro could answer, the door to the coloring room swung open.

Emma waddled out, holding a green crayon in one hand and a half-eaten cracker in the other. She walked right past her mother, marched straight up to Alessandro, and grabbed the hem of his pristine suit jacket.

"You have a grumpy face," Emma announced solemnly.

Alessandro froze. He looked down at the child, his fierce, calculating expression slowly fracturing under the weight of her innocent observation.

"Do I?" Alessandro asked, his voice softening against his will.

"Yes," Emma nodded. "You need a hug. Bruno gives hugs when I'm grumpy."

Without waiting for permission, the three-year-old wrapped her small arms around Alessandro’s tailored trouser leg, pressing her cheek against his knee.

Sophia gasped, stepping forward to pull her away. "Emma, no! Don't touch Mr. Moretti—"

Alessandro raised a single hand, stopping Sophia dead in her tracks.

Slowly, awkwardly, the most feared syndicate boss in the Midwest bent down. He didn't just pat her head; with a tenderness that stunned even himself, Alessandro scooped Emma up into his arms, settling her against his shoulder with practiced, surprisingly steady ease.

Emma patted his cheek with her sticky hand. "See? Much better."

Alessandro looked over the child's head at Sophia, a faint, impossible ghost of a smile touching the corner of his mouth.

"She's right," Alessandro murmured. "Much better."
