Chapter 6 - Shadows and Strategy

Deep beneath the main estate, inside the high-tech security bunker known as the Vault, the monitors flickered with silent, ominous data feeds.

Marco Bellini slammed a dossier onto the stainless-steel briefing table. The pages inside detailed financial transfers, shell company registrations, and intercepted communications originating from downtown Chicago.

"Vincenzo isn't backing down," Marco reported, pacing across the polished concrete floor. "He’s mobilizing the rest of the North Side syndicates. He thinks the attack on the staff quarters proved we’re losing our grip. And worse... he knows about the civilians in the main wing."

At the head of the table, Alessandro sat in silence, leaning forward with his elbows resting on the steel surface, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. His expression was cold, calculating, and utterly merciless.

"How did he find out about Sophia and the child?" Alessandro asked, his voice dangerously low.

"An inside leak," Marco admitted, jaw clenching. "One of the logistics coordinators we brought over from the Cicero docks last month. He was feeding information to Vincenzo’s scouts. We picked him up an hour ago. He's currently downstairs in holding."

Alessandro stood up slowly. He didn't raise his voice, but the sudden drop in temperature in the room was palpable. "Take me to him."

The holding cells beneath the Moretti estate were built for interrogation, not comfort. Raw concrete walls, harsh fluorescent lights, and the heavy scent of fear and damp iron.

The traitor—a greasy, middle-aged man named Frank whose face was already bruised from security’s initial detainment—was strapped to a heavy metal chair. When the iron door swung open and Alessandro stepped into the cell, Frank began shaking uncontrollably.

"Boss—Boss, please!" Frank sobbed, leaning forward against the restraints. "I didn't mean no harm! They threatened my family! They said if I didn't tell them who was living in the main east wing—"

Alessandro walked up to him, stopping just inches away. He didn't touch him. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply stared down at the traitor with eyes as dead and cold as winter stone.

"You traded the safety of my house for your own skin," Alessandro said quietly.

"I swear to God, Boss, I didn't know they were going to send hitmen to the quarters! I just thought—"

"You thought wrong," Alessandro interrupted. He turned his head slightly toward Marco. "Put him on a cargo freighter bound for Marseille. Make sure he spends the entire trip locked in the brig with no communication. And seize every asset his family holds."

"Boss, please! Not Marseille! Have mercy!" Frank screamed as Marco grabbed the chair and hauled him backward toward the exit.

Alessandro watched them leave without a flicker of remorse. But as the heavy iron door slammed shut, his phone buzzed in his pocket.

It was an internal text from Lillian, the head housekeeper:

“Mr. Moretti, the little girl is asking for you in the library. She refuses to eat her dinner until you come read her a story.”

Alessandro stared at the screen for ten seconds. The ruthless syndicate boss who had just exiled a traitor to Europe felt a strange, terrifying tug in his chest.

He slipped the phone back into his pocket, turned his back on the holding cells, and headed upstairs to read a bedtime story.
