Chapter 1 - The First Command

The silence in the cramped staff quarters was absolute, save for the steady, rhythmic breathing of the massive Cane Corso stretched out across the small rug. Sophia Carter stood frozen, her fingers clutching the edge of her gray housekeeping apron, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Emma, her three-year-old daughter, stood directly in front of Alessandro Moretti—the most feared man in Chicago—with her tiny hand completely engulfed in his large, tailored fingers. She had tugged him down with an authority that left the syndicate boss temporarily paralyzed.

"Sit," Emma repeated, pointing a chubby finger at the worn wooden stool beside her toy box. "Bruno is sleeping. You have to be quiet."

Alessandro looked down at the child, then slowly shifted his obsidian-dark gaze to Sophia, whose face had drained of all color. No one gave orders to Alessandro Moretti. Not rival capos, not corrupt politicians, and certainly not housekeepers' children.

Yet, instead of pulling his hand away or signaling Marco Bellini at the door to clear the room, Alessandro slowly bent his knees. With a fluid, controlled motion that defied his towering frame, the thirty-eight-year-old billionaire lowered himself onto the miniature wooden stool. It looked absurdly small beneath him, yet he sat there, trapped by a pair of wide, innocent brown eyes.

"I am sitting," Alessandro said, his deep, gravelly voice carrying a low vibration that made Sophia’s skin prickle. "Satisfied, little one?"

Emma nodded sagely, patting his knee once with her free hand. "Good. Now you can stay. Bruno likes company when his leg hurts."

From the doorway, Marco Bellini coughed softly into his fist to hide a look of sheer, unadulterated shock. Marco had worked for Alessandro for twelve years; he had seen men broken, syndicates dismantled, and empires reshaped. He had never, under any circumstances, seen the boss follow an instruction issued by a toddler wearing mismatched boots.

Sophia finally found her voice, though it came out as a breathless squeak. "Mr. Moretti, please—I am so sorry. She doesn't understand—she has no filter, sir. I’ll get the dog out of your way immediately, I swear, just please don't—"

"Quiet, Sophia," Alessandro interrupted softly, his gaze remaining fixed on Emma, who had already turned back to stroke the silver-gray fur around Bruno’s scarred muzzle.

"He's not in my way," Alessandro added, rising slowly back to his feet. He looked down at the dog, whose tail gave a single, lazy thud against the floorboards—the first time Bruno had acknowledged his master's presence all evening.

"Sir?" Marco asked from the corridor.

"Leave the dog," Alessandro commanded, turning toward the exit. He paused at the threshold, glancing back at Sophia, whose shoulders were still hunched in perpetual defense. "Dr. Hale left medication instructions on my desk. Ensure the animal takes them with his evening meal. Both of you."

Before Sophia could reply, Alessandro stepped out into the hallway, his dark overcoat sweeping past the doorframe. But as the heavy oak door clicked shut, the invisible barrier that had always separated the master of the Moretti estate from his lowly employees had irrevocably cracked.
