Chapter 10 - A Kingdom Found

Two years later.
The iron gates of the Moretti estate stood open under a brilliant, cloudless autumn sky. The grounds had changed; the formal, intimidating hedges had been softened with wildflowers and garden paths, and the air no longer smelled solely of wealth and power, but of baking bread, blooming roses, and the sound of children running across the lawn.
Inside the grand courtyard, a massive black Cane Corso—now showing deep gray across his entire muzzle and moving with a slow, dignified limp—lay stretched out on a warm patch of cobblestone, fast asleep with his chin resting on a pair of pink toddler shoes.
Inside the main study, the heavy double doors were propped wide open.
Sophia stood by the desk, reviewing household inventory on an iPad, her posture relaxed, a quiet confidence radiating from her. She wore a tailored emerald dress that matched the warmth in her eyes.
Footsteps approached from the hallway, accompanied by the excited giggles of a five-year-old girl and the hurried patter of a toddler boy—a new addition to the household who had inherited his mother's brown eyes and his father's stubborn chin.
"Mommy! Daddy caught a big fish in the pond!" five-year-old Emma announced, bursting into the study, holding up a small toy plastic fish while little Leo clung proudly to Alessandro’s leg.
Alessandro stepped into the room, holding the toddler with one arm while untying a makeshift fishing pole made of a stick and string with the other. His expensive suit jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and his face bore a relaxed, completely genuine smile that the Chicago underworld would never have believed possible.
He walked over to Sophia, dropping the toy pole onto the desk and wrapping his free arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side.
"Your daughter is a terrible fishing instructor," Alessandro teased softly, pressing a kiss into her hair. "She told me the plastic shark was biting."
"It's called imagination, Mr. Moretti," Sophia laughed, tilting her head up to meet his gaze, her hands resting naturally against his chest. "Something your accountants don't teach you in business school."
"My accountants are idiots," Alessandro murmured, lowering his lips to capture hers in a deep, lingering kiss that made Emma cover her eyes with a dramatic gasp of ‘Ew, gross!’

Outside in the courtyard, Bruno lifted his heavy head, let out a slow, rumbling sigh of absolute contentment, and closed his eyes once more.
The maid, the toddler, the mafia boss, and his feared dog had all found their way through the dark. And in the heart of the Moretti empire, love had finally rewritten every rule.
