Chapter 9 - THE GIFT OF LIFE

One year later.
The Caruso estate in Long Island was blooming with midsummer flowers. The air was warm, filled with the scent of lavender and salt water from the ocean.
In the sunlit garden house behind the main estate, a magnificent white Steinway grand piano sat surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass doors that looked out onto the beach.
Elena sat at the piano, playing a soft, gentle lullaby.
Beside her sat Sophie, now nine years old, her long chestnut hair tied with a blue ribbon. Her small fingers moved across the low keys, playing a gentle accompaniment alongside her mother. She had become a remarkably talented young pianist, inheriting her mother’s ear for music and her father’s intense focus.
Through the glass doors, Matteo walked into the garden house carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and fruit. He looked happier, younger, and completely at peace. The cold edge that had once defined his face was gone, replaced by the warm, confident aura of a devoted husband and father.
“How is the new duet coming along, ladies?” Matteo asked with a bright smile, setting the tray down on the marble table.
Sophie spun around on the bench, her gray eyes shining. “Daddy! Listen! Mommy taught me the second verse of Naima!”
“Show him, sweetheart,” Elena smiled proudly.
Sophie played the complex melody with astonishing grace and confidence. Matteo sat beside her on the bench, wrapping his arm around her shoulders, listening to his daughter play the song that had once been his only connection to a lost memory.
When she finished, Matteo kissed her hair. “That was magnificent, Sophie. Your mother would be jealous of your talent.”
“I am jealous!” Elena laughed, leaning over to kiss Sophie’s cheek.
Suddenly, Elena gasped slightly, holding her hand over her stomach.
Matteo’s posture instantly straightened, his protective instincts flaring up. “Elena? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
Elena looked at Matteo, a soft, radiant smile spreading across her face. She took his hand and placed it gently over her stomach.
“I’m better than okay, Matteo,” Elena whispered, her eyes shining with tears of joy. “I went to the doctor this morning.”
Matteo’s eyes widened. “Elena... are you...?”
“We’re having a baby,” Elena smiled, tears spilling over her eyelashes. “Sophie is going to be a big sister.”
Matteo stood up, pulling Elena into his arms and lifting her off her feet, laughing with pure, overwhelming joy. He kissed her face, her lips, her hands, unable to contain the torrent of happiness rushing through his heart.
Sophie jumped off the piano bench, dancing around them in excitement. “I’m going to be a big sister! Is it a boy or a girl?”
May you like
Matteo set Elena down gently, kneeling beside Sophie and pulling her into their embrace.
“It doesn't matter if it’s a boy or a girl, sweetheart,” Matteo said, his voice choking with emotional gratitude. “As long as they have your eyes and your mother’s heart.”
