Chapter 2 - THE FORTRESS IN THE SKY

By 7:00 PM, the storm clouds over Manhattan opened up, pouring heavy, freezing rain over the city streets. Three black armored SUVs tore through the traffic, escorting Elena and Sophie into the subterranean parking garage of Caruso Tower.

The penthouse occupied the top three floors of the seventy-story glass monolith. It was a fortress of steel, bulletproof glass, and state-of-the-art surveillance—a place where Matteo had lived like a solitary king in a cold, marble castle for six long years.

When the elevator doors opened directly into the private foyer, Sophie gasped.

The floor was dark polished hardwood, illuminated by soft warm light filtering from floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the sparkling Manhattan skyline. A grand Steinway piano sat near the glass, bathed in the city glow.

“It’s huge,” Sophie whispered, clutching her one-eyed bear. “Is this your house, Daddy?”

Matteo knelt beside her, unbuttoning her oversized coat and hanging it up himself—a task his staff had never seen him perform for anyone.

“It’s your house now, Sophie,” Matteo said softly. “Yours and your mom’s.”

He signaled to Mrs. Gable, his elderly, fiercely loyal head housekeeper who had been with the Caruso family for forty years. Mrs. Gable wiped a tear from her eye as she looked at Sophie.

“Take them to the master suite,” Matteo instructed her softly. “Prepare hot food. Anything she wants. Prepare the guest wing for Elena.”

“I’ll take care of them like my own children, Mr. Caruso,” Mrs. Gable promised, holding out her hand to Sophie. “Come along, little princess. I have hot chocolate and fresh chocolate chip cookies waiting.”

Sophie looked at Elena, who gave her a reassuring nod. The little girl smiled, taking Mrs. Gable’s hand and skipping toward the grand hallway.

Once the children were out of earshot, Elena walked over to the grand Steinway piano. She ran her fingers lightly over the dark wood.

“You bought a Steinway,” Elena said softly.

“I bought it six years ago,” Matteo confessed, standing behind her. “The week after you vanished. I thought... I thought if I kept it here, if I kept playing the songs you loved, somehow the universe would bring you back.”

Elena turned to face him, tears swimming in her dark eyes. “They stole six years from us, Matteo. Six years of watching her grow up, six years of first steps, of birthdays... I washed dishes until my hands bled just to buy her shoes.”

Matteo’s heart shattered. He pulled her into his arms, wrapping his suit jacket around her trembling shoulders. Elena didn't push him away this time. She rested her forehead against his chest, weeping quietly as six years of terror and isolation melted into his strength.

“I will give you those six years back, Elena,” Matteo vowed into her hair. “Every dollar they took, every tear you cried, they will pay for tenfold. I swear it on my life.”

Marco stepped into the foyer, holding a satellite phone. His face was grave.

“Matteo. Anthony and Nico just arrived at the Long Island estate with twenty armed men. They’ve locked down the perimeter. They know we intercepted the file from Panama. They are declaring a vote of no confidence against you at the nine o’clock meeting.”

Matteo gently let go of Elena. He straightened his tie, pulled his dark wool coat over his shoulders, and pulled a heavy black 9mm pistol from the safe concealed behind the wall panel.

“Tell the Capos I will be there at eight-thirty,” Matteo said, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. “And tell Sal to prepare the secondary convoy.”

Elena took his arm, her eyes wide with panic. “Matteo... don't go into a trap!”

Matteo leaned down and kissed her forehead softly. “It’s not a trap, my love. It’s an execution.”
