Chapter 4 - HEALING THE SHADOWS

When Matteo returned to the penthouse at midnight, the storm had passed, leaving a clear, star-lit sky over Manhattan.

The apartment was quiet. He walked softly down the long carpeted hallway toward the master suite. He pushed the door open gently.

A soft nightlight illuminated the massive king-sized bed. Sophie was fast asleep, buried under a mountain of plush velvet blankets, holding her one-eyed bear close to her chest. Beside her, Elena was curled up, her hand gently resting over Sophie’s back.

Matteo took off his suit jacket, unbuttoned his collar, and sat quietly in the armchair near the window, watching them breathe.

For six years, his life had been defined by violence, paranoia, and an insatiable search for a ghost. Tonight, for the first time in his thirty-eight years, the noise in his head had stopped.

Suddenly, Elena’s eyes opened. She saw him sitting in the dim light. She quietly slid out of bed, careful not to wake Sophie, and walked over to him.

“Is it over?” she whispered.

Matteo took her small, warm hands in his. “It’s over, Elena. Anthony and Nico are in federal custody. They will never threaten you again. Your name has been completely cleared.”

Elena sank to her knees before his chair, resting her hands on his knees, tears silently streaming down her face. “I couldn't believe it, Matteo. For six years, I thought you hated me. I thought you ordered those men to drive me away.”

Matteo leaned down, framing her face with his large hands, wiping her tears with his thumbs. “I searched every corner of this country for you, Elena. I never stopped loving you. Not for a single second.”

Elena looked up into his winter-gray eyes. The pain, the anger, the years of cold isolation between them vanished like mist under the autumn sun. She leaned up and pressed her lips to his.

The kiss was sweet, desperate, and filled with six years of unspent passion. Matteo pulled her into his lap, wrapping his arms tightly around her, holding her as if she were the only real thing in a world made of smoke.

“Stay with me,” Matteo breathed against her lips. “Don't go back to Ohio. Don't run anymore. Let me be her father. Let me be your husband.”

Elena rested her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart. “She needs a father, Matteo. And I... I never stopped loving you either.”

The next morning, sunlight flooded the penthouse.

Sophie woke up early, running into the grand kitchen in her oversized pajamas. Mrs. Gable had prepared a feast: Belgian waffles, fresh berries, whipped cream, and bacon.

Matteo sat at the kitchen island in a simple sweater and trousers, drinking coffee—a sight his staff had never witnessed in his entire tenure as Don.

Sophie hopped onto the barstool beside him, pointing a berry at his face. “Daddy, why don't you have shoes on?”

Matteo chuckled, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “Because I’m at home, sweetheart.”

“Are we going back to the apartment on 44th Street?” Sophie asked softly, a slight shadow of worry crossing her little face. “The landlord said we had to give the keys back.”

Matteo took her small hand in his. “No, Sophie. You never have to go back there. This is your home now. And today, we are going to do something very special.”

“What?” Sophie asked, her gray eyes sparkling.

“We are going to buy your bear a brand-new eye,” Matteo smiled. “And then we are going to buy you a piano.”
