Chapter 3 - THE SNAKE’S DEN

The Caruso estate in Old Westbury, Long Island, was an imposing Tudor-style mansion set behind ten-foot wrought-iron gates and high stone walls. For half a century, it had been the seat of power for the family—the place where peace was brokered and execution orders were signed.

Inside the grand oak-paneled dining room, twelve Caporegimes sat around a heavy mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Uncle Anthony Caruso—a silver-haired man in his late fifties with cold, calculating eyes—and his son Nico, a sharp-featured man wearing a tailored Italian suit and a arrogant smirk.

“Matteo has lost his mind!” Anthony announced to the room, slamming his diamond-ringed fist onto the mahogany. “He brought a civilian woman’s bastard child into Caruso Tower! He’s compromised security! For six years, he’s been distracted, weak, obsessed with a ghost! It’s time for new leadership!”

Nico leaned back in his leather chair, sipping scotch. “My father is right. The commission agrees. Matteo is unfit to lead the family. We vote tonight, or we eliminate him.”

Suddenly, the massive double doors of the dining room exploded inward with a deafening crash.

Four of Anthony’s guards were thrown to the floor as Sal and six elite Caruso enforcers flooded the room, submachine guns raised.

Through the smoke and dust walked Matteo Caruso.

He walked calmly, his polished leather shoes clicking against the hardwood floor. He wore no body armor, no helmet. In his right hand, he carried a heavy steel briefcase.

The twelve Capos instantly stood up, some reaching for weapons, but Sal’s men racked their slides in unison, forcing everyone to freeze.

“Sit down,” Matteo commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying, absolute authority that made every veteran mobster in the room sink back into their chairs.

Anthony stood his ground, pointing a shaking finger at his nephew. “Matteo! You dare breach my home with armed men? You’re stripped of your rank!”

Matteo walked to the head of the table, stepping right up to Nico. Without saying a single word, Matteo grabbed Nico by his silk tie, slammed his face into the mahogany table with sickening force, and pressed his gun barrel directly behind Nico’s ear.

Nico screamed as blood poured from his broken nose onto the polished wood.

“Matteo! Stop!” Anthony shrieked, drawing his own gun, but Sal instantly aimed his barrel at Anthony’s forehead.

“Six years ago,” Matteo said softly, holding Nico’s head down against the table. “You went to my lobby, Nico. You spoke to a frightened, twenty-two-year-old girl. You gave her five thousand dollars and told her I would kill her if she ever came back.”

The room went dead silent. The Capos looked at each other in confusion.

Matteo opened the steel briefcase with his free hand and dumped its contents onto the center of the table.

Hundreds of documents spilled across the wood: Swiss bank records, Panamanian corporate filings, forged wire transfers, and audio recordings.

“My uncle Anthony and my cousin Nico didn't just drive away the woman I loved,” Matteo declared to the assembled Capos. “They stole two hundred million dollars from our shipping accounts. They framed an innocent civilian. They bought real estate in Europe under their own names while telling you the federal government seized our assets!”

Marco pressed play on a digital recorder sitting on the table.

Nico’s recorded voice echoed through the room: “Once we bleed the shipping accounts dry, we let the feds take down Matteo. Dad takes the chair, and we wipe out the girl and the kid in Ohio so there are no blood heirs.”

The twelve Capos gasped. Several older men turned to stare at Anthony with pure disgust and rage. In the mafia code, stealing from the family and plotting against your own blood chief was an unforgivable death sentence.

Anthony’s face turned gray. “It’s... it’s a lie! It’s a digital forgery!”

Old Man Dominick, the most respected senior Capo in New York, stood up slowly. He looked at the bank documents, then looked at Anthony.

“The signatures match, Anthony,” Dominick said, his voice filled with venom. “You stole from us. You tried to murder our Don’s blood.”

Dominick turned to Matteo, bowing his head respectfully. “The table is yours, Don Caruso. What is your judgment?”

Matteo looked down at Nico, whose eyes were wide with pathetic, sniveling terror.

“Nico,” Matteo whispered into his ear. “You made my daughter go hungry for six years.”

Matteo didn't pull the trigger. He pulled Nico up by his collar and threw him across the room into Sal’s arms.

“Take them both to the basement,” Matteo ordered coldly. “Strip them of every dollar, every property, every asset they own. Transfer everything back to the family accounts... and then hand them over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation along with the full evidence files of their wire fraud.”

Anthony gasped. “The FBI?! You’re handing your own blood to the feds?!”

“Death is too easy for you, Uncle,” Matteo said, turning his back on them. “You will spend the rest of your natural lives in a maximum-security federal prison, stripped of your name, your money, and your dignity. You will rot as nobodies.”

As Sal and the enforcers dragged Anthony and Nico out of the room screaming for mercy, Matteo turned to face his twelve Capos.

“Effective immediately,” Matteo announced, his voice ringing through the estate. “All illegal smuggling through the Brooklyn docks is shut down. We transition entirely to clean corporate logistics. Anyone who wants to stay in my family will earn clean money. Anyone who doesn't... can join my uncle in prison.”

The Capos looked at each other, seeing the reborn, unstoppable light in their Don’s gray eyes. One by one, all twelve men stood up and bowed their heads.

“Hail Don Caruso,” they echoed in unison.
