Chapter 24 - Whispers of the Stars

A heavy blanket of stars stretched across the clear midnight sky above the mountain ridge. A gentle late-autumn frost had settled over the grass, making the night air crisp and invigorating.

Late into the evening, after the rest of the household had fallen asleep, Constantine and Josie walked down to the edge of the private wooden dock extending into the dark lake. Wrapped in a shared wool blanket, they sat side by side at the very end of the pier, their feet dangling just above the dark, tranquil water.

The silence of the valley was absolute—broken only by the soft rustle of pine needles in the wind and the gentle lap of water against the wooden pilings beneath them.

"Do you ever think about the old days?" Josie asked quietly, leaning her head against his sturdy shoulder.

Constantine paused, gazing out toward the dark horizon where the mountain peaks met the starry sky. "Sometimes," he admitted candidly. "Only to remind myself of how miraculous this present reality is. The darkness we fought through makes this light mean everything."

He wrapped his arm securely around her waist, pulling her closer against his side to keep out the chill of the night air.

"I used to think survival was the ultimate goal," Constantine continued, his voice barely louder than a whisper. "Now I realize survival was just the doorway. Living with you... loving you... that is the true purpose."

Josie closed her eyes, letting his deep voice wash over her like a comforting melody. She rested her hand over his heart, feeling its strong, unchanging rhythm. "I love you, Constantine. Beyond time, beyond words."

"And I love you, my heart," he answered gently, pressing his lips against her temple. "Always."
