Chapter 21 - A Season of Renewal

As the calendar shifted into early spring, the heavy ice on the lake began to crack and thaw, creating a deep, resonant sound that echoed off the surrounding cliffs. Sunshine slowly reclaimed the valley, melting the snowdrifts into clear streams that cascaded down the mountainside.
The changing season brought a new project to the estate. Josie, along with Mila, decided to cultivate a greenhouse near the eastern edge of the property. They wanted to grow wild orchids, lavender, and fresh vegetables for the household.
Constantine threw himself into the work with quiet enthusiasm. He hauled cedar timbers, built raised garden beds, and secured reinforced glass panels to withstand the mountain winds. Working with his hands for the sole purpose of creation—rather than defense—brought a different kind of strength to his spirit.
One afternoon, while setting a heavy beam in place, he wiped the sweat from his brow and looked down at his hands. For years, those hands had known only conflict and protection. Now, they were caked in rich mountain soil and scented with cedar.
Josie walked into the sunlit structure carrying a pitcher of cold lemonade. She set it down and stepped close to him, unbothered by the dirt on his shirt. She wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her forehead against his chest.
"You're working too hard," she murmured with a slight smile.
"I'm building something that lasts," Constantine said softly, resting his chin on her hair as he wrapped his arms around her. "Something green. Something alive."
May you like
"You already did," Josie replied, looking up into his dark eyes. "Look around us, Constantine. Everything we have here is alive because of you."
He kissed her brow gently, holding her tightly against him as the warm spring air blew through the open doors of the greenhouse, carrying the scent of rich earth and blooming wildflowers.
