Chapter 23 - The Passage of Time

Autumn returned to the valley with brilliant intensity. The dense pine forests were now painted in vivid shades of crimson, gold, and deep amber. Crisp mountain winds swept across the surface of the lake, sending fallen leaves dancing across the wide stone terraces of the mansion.
Years slid by in a quiet, beautiful blur of shared moments and steady growth. Mila grew from a playful child into a thoughtful young girl, excelling in her studies and developing a deep love for the mountain landscape that raised her. Constantine personally taught her how to ride horses along the mountain trails, while Josie passed down her love for art, literature, and music.
The estate matured alongside them. The saplings Constantine had planted around the perimeter grew tall and strong, creating a natural canopy that shielded their home like a living fortress.
One late afternoon, as a golden sunset bathed the valley in warm light, Josie sat at her easel on the terrace, painting the reflection of the crimson trees on the surface of the water. Constantine sat nearby in a wooden armchair, reading a book, occasionally looking up just to watch the gentle concentration on his wife’s face.
"You're staring again," Josie said softly without looking away from her canvas, a small smile playing on her lips.
"I never get tired of the view," Constantine replied smoothly, his voice deep and warm.
"The lake or the painting?"
"The artist," he answered without hesitation.
Josie laughed, setting down her brush to walk over to him. She sat comfortably on his lap, wrapping an arm around his neck. Though faint silver strands now touched Constantine’s temples, his eyes remained as sharp, clear, and intensely devoted as the day they first met.

"We have lived a good life here, haven't we?" she whispered, tracing the firm line of his jawline.
"The best life," he replied softly. "And it's nowhere near finished."
