Chapter 17 - The Uninvited Guest

The summer tranquility was unexpectedly shattered on a crisp Tuesday afternoon when a black, heavy-duty SUV slowly wound its way up the long, private driveway of the estate.
The security response was instantaneous and terrifyingly precise. Silent alarms pulsed through the house. Within seconds, three armed guards slipped out from the treeline, hands hovering over their holstered sidearms, while Viktor moved into position on the upper terrace with a rifle concealed behind a stone pillar.
Constantine stepped out onto the front stone porch. In a split second, the gentle father vanished. His body posture shifted into that of an unstoppable predator—his jaw set like iron, his spine straight, and his eyes turning to arctic ice. Josie remained just inside the heavy oak doorway, her heart thumping against her ribs, but she kept her composure, trusting him completely.
The SUV stopped at the base of the porch steps. The driver’s side door opened, and a gray-haired man in an expensive charcoal suit stepped out. It was Special Agent Vance—a high-ranking federal agent who had spent almost a decade trying to put Constantine into a supermax prison before an uneasy, classified immunity deal had been struck years prior.
Vance kept his hands held out in front of him, palms open, showing he wasn't reaching for a weapon as he took in the estate, the ongoing construction, and the quiet tension in the air.
"Stand down, Constantine. I'm not here with a tactical team, and I don't have a warrant," Vance said, his gravelly voice carrying across the silent yard. "I just wanted to see if the intelligence reports were accurate. Word on the street in Washington was that someone tried to blow your sanctuary off the map."
"They tried. They failed," Constantine replied, his voice dead of emotion, his massive body strategically shielding the door behind him. "Our deal remains absolute, Vance. My past is dead, my operations are dismantled, and my business with your government is closed."
Vance looked past Constantine’s shoulder, catching a brief, clear glimpse of Josie standing calmly inside the entryway, before bringing his eyes back to meet the warlord's gaze. Vance let out a slow, tired breath and gave a solemn, respectful nod.
"You really built something clean here, didn't you?" Vance murmured quietly. "Keep it that way, Constantine. Live your life, raise your family, and don't ever give my agency a reason to come up this mountain again."
May you like
"You will never have one," Constantine answered with cold, absolute finality.
Without another word, Vance turned, climbed back into his SUV, and drove down the winding gravel road. As the sound of the engine faded into the forest, Constantine didn't feel rage or paranoia—only a profound, quiet sense of relief. The past had knocked on his door one last time, and it had found nothing left to take.
