Chapter 20 - Echoes of the Mountain

The tranquility of their winter haven became the rhythm of their lives over the following weeks. Mornings began with the pale pink light of dawn reflecting off the frozen lake, while evenings were spent around the massive stone fireplace in the great room. Constantine, once a man whose mind was constantly burdened by threat assessments and strategic defenses, found himself learning the simple art of being present.

One morning, after a fresh snowfall, Constantine walked with Mila through the pine forest bordering the estate. Dressed in her bright red winter coat, Mila chattered endlessly about the tracks left behind by snowshoe hares and deer.

"Look, Daddy!" she exclaimed, kneeling by a deep pine tree. "A bird left its footprints right here!"

Constantine knelt beside her, his large frame contrasting sharply with her small form. He carefully pointed to the delicate marks in the snow. "A mountain sparrow," he said gently, his voice soft. "Searching for pine nuts before the frost hardens."

Mila looked up at him, her dark eyes shining with pure trust. "Will the snow stay forever?"

"Not forever," Constantine replied, lifting her easily into his arms and setting her on his shoulder. "Spring always comes back. But while the snow is here, we keep each other warm."

From the floor-to-ceiling windows of the mansion, Josie watched the two of them walk back toward the house, their breath pluming in the crisp air. For years, the idea of safety had been a theoretical concept—a fragile state that required constant vigilance. But watching her husband laugh freely at something their daughter said, Josie felt a profound sense of permanence settling into her bones. The past, with all its shadows, was finally losing its hold.
