Chapter 5 - The Sunrise on the Porch

Six months later, the spring sun was shining bright over the green lawns of Greenwich.

The cold marble in the foyer of my mansion had been torn out, replaced by warm, hand-scraped oak flooring that felt comfortable beneath bare feet. The white, sterile furniture was gone, replaced by soft, colorful couches, low bookshelves filled with fairy tales, and a massive art table covered in crayons, glitter, and butcher paper.

I sat on the front porch swing, sipping a cup of hot coffee, listening to the laughter drifting from the front lawn.

Lily was running through the grass, wearing her bright yellow dress—the one she had wanted to wear six months ago. She wasn't shaking. Her cheeks were full and rosy, her arms clear of bruises, her dark hair tied up in two neat pigtails held by little butterfly clips.

Running right behind her was a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby, who barked excitedly every time Lily dropped a tennis ball into the grass.

"Mommy! Look!" Lily called out, her voice bright, clear, and soaring through the warm morning air. "Barnaby found the ball!"

My heart swelled with a joy so deep it wiped away every cold memory of the border, every memory of the snow, and every memory of the betrayal.

"I see it, baby!" I called back, smiling as she ran up the porch steps and threw her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder.

She didn't cling out of fear anymore. She held on out of pure, radiant love.

I sat back on the swing, holding my daughter tight against my chest as the warm breeze rustled the leaves of the oak trees in our yard. The mansion was ours. The future was ours. And no one would ever bring harm to my child again.
