Chapter 2 - The Audit of Flesh and Bone

For three seconds, the only sound in the grand foyer was the hum of the central heating and Lily’s ragged breathing against my throat.
Vanessa looked between Grant and me, her polished mask slipping to reveal cold, calculating terror. "Grant, tell me she's lying. You told me your family owned Carlisle Logistics for three generations!"
"It... it was a joint venture," Grant stammered, his confident posture collapsing into panicked slouching. "Evelyn’s family provided capital, but I ran the operations! I built the brand!"
"You built nothing," I said coldly. "My father handed you a failing transport line because I believed you were a good man who loved me. I put the shares in a trust to shield our family from liability during my federal deployments. I trusted you with my legacy, Grant. And more importantly, I trusted you with my child."
I looked down at Lily. Her eyes were trembling, her tiny lips parting as she tried to form words that had been beaten out of her over eight dark weeks.
"Mommy..." she whimpered, the sound so fragile it tore my soul into pieces. "...she hurt my hands when you were gone. She said you weren't coming back. She said you died in the cold."
The sheer horror of those words hit me like a physical blow. Vanessa had not just abused my child physically; she had systematically broken her spirit, convincing a five-year-old girl that her mother was dead in a ditch so she would stop crying for help.
"You told her I was dead?" I asked, turning my gaze slowly toward Vanessa.
Vanessa backed away until her spine hit the arm of the plush cream sofa. "She wouldn't stop screaming! She kept crying for you every night! Grant told me to handle it! He said he couldn't sleep because of her whining!"
"I never said that!" Grant yelled, turning on Vanessa instantly to save his own skin. "You said you were taking care of her! You told me she was in bed!"
"You coward!" Vanessa spat, her eyes widening. "You sat right beside me while I locked her in the laundry room so we could host the board dinner!"
I pulled my satellite phone from my tactical vest. I didn't dial local police. I pressed a single speed-dial button that connected directly to Federal Marshal Marcus Brody, my unit commander and a man who owed his life to me twice over.
"Evelyn?" Marcus’s gravelly voice answered on the first ring. "Did you make it home safely?"
"Marcus," I said, keeping my eyes fixed on Grant. "I need an emergency tactical extraction unit, a medical team specialized in pediatric trauma, and a federal asset seizure team at my primary residence in Greenwich."
Grant gasped. "Evelyn, no! You can't involve the Marshals! The company's IPO is scheduled for next month! If federal agents raid my house, the stock value will drop to zero!"
"The stock value is already zero, Grant," I said softly into the receiver. "Initiate Protocol Seven. My husband and his associate have committed physical child abuse, corporate fraud, and unlawful detainment on federal trust property."
"On our way," Marcus replied instantly. "ETA six minutes."
Grant lunged forward, throwing his hands out in desperation. "Evelyn, please! Think about Lily! A public scandal will ruin her life!"
Before his hand could touch my arm, my boot snapped out in a lightning-fast front kick, driving straight into his sternum. The blow sent him flying backward over the glass coffee table, shattering it into thousands of gleaming shards as he crashed onto the rug, gasping for air.

Vanessa screamed, diving away from the glass, her hands covering her face.
"Don't you ever touch me again," I whispered, holding Lily securely against my chest. "And don't you ever say my daughter's name."
