They forced her daughter to kneel as punishment—but they had no idea the girl's mother legally owned the mansion, the company, and the man they were trying to steal.

Grant did not even look at Lily. His hands went straight to Vanessa’s shoulders, his fingers smoothing the velvet lapels of my silk bathrobe—the robe I had bought in Paris three years ago during our fifth wedding anniversary.

"Evelyn," Grant said, his voice dropping into that smooth, persuasive baritone he used whenever a business deal went sideways. He turned toward me, placing himself subtly between Vanessa and the doorway. "You weren't supposed to be back until next week. Your unit said the operation was extended."

"The operation ended thirty-six hours ago," I said, my voice dangerously calm. Lily’s tiny heart was hammering against my ribcage, her tears soaking through my tactical jacket. "Who is this woman, Grant?"

"Let's be adults about this," Grant replied, taking a step forward with his hands raised in a placating gesture. "You've been emotionally absent for years, Evelyn. You prioritize your government contracts over your home life. Vanessa came in to manage the estate and consult on the Carlisle Logistics restructuring. Things... evolved. We were going to discuss this calmly once the legal team finalized the separation papers."

"Separation papers?" I echoed, looking at his tailored navy suit, the golden cufflinks glittering at his wrists. "You put our daughter on her knees to scrub a floor because she spilled something on your mistress."

Vanessa sneered behind him, leaning her head against his arm. "She didn't just spill something, Grant. She ruined a three-thousand-dollar silk gown I brought for the gala tonight. The child lacks discipline. She doesn't speak, she ignores basic commands, and frankly, she's an embarrassment."

Something ancient and primal snapped inside me, but five years of elite federal tactical training suppressed the impulse to break her jaw. Instead, I tightened my arms around Lily, feeling every single ridge of her tiny, malnourished ribs.

"Look at her, Grant," I commanded, my voice dropping an octave, ringing through the cold marble foyer like a hammer on an anvil. "Look at your daughter."

Grant glanced at Lily for a fraction of a second before flinching away. "She's fine, Evelyn. Don't be dramatic. She's just throwing a tantrum because Vanessa established some much-needed structure while you were playing soldier in the snow."

"Look at her arms," I rasped, stepping closer. I pulled back the sleeve of Lily’s yellow pajamas, revealing the distinct, mottled purple-and-yellow bruises encircling her tiny forearms. "These aren't tantrums. These are defense marks."

Grant’s face paled slightly, but before he could speak, Vanessa scoffed loud and clear. "Oh, please! The girl falls constantly. She's clumsy, just like her mother. Grant, tell her to leave. She's trespassing in our house."

"Trespassing?" I let out a dry, humorless laugh that made Grant flinch. "You really haven't told her, have you, Grant?"

Grant cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his tie. "Evelyn, let's go into the study and talk about the division of assets. There's no need to make a scene in front of the domestic staff."

"What division of assets?" Vanessa asked, her dark brows furrowing as she looked at Grant. "Sweetheart, you said the prenuptial agreement gave you seventy percent of the Carlisle estate upon five years of marriage. You said she was just a glorified civil servant living off your family's fortune."

I looked at my husband—the man who had built a glittering empire of lies while I was hunting cartels in freezing border towns.

"The Carlisle estate," I murmured, staring into Grant's terrified eyes. "Grant... who bought the deed to this seven-acre mansion in 2021?"

Grant swallowed hard, unable to speak.

"Who funded the seed capital for Carlisle Logistics when your father's firm went bankrupt?" I continued, taking another step forward. "Who owns ninety-four percent of the parent holding company registered under the trust in Delaware?"

Vanessa’s expression shifted from smug superiority to sharp confusion. "Grant? What is she talking about?"

"She's exaggerating," Grant stammered, sweat breaking out along his hairline. "Evelyn, please. We can handle this privately. Don't do this here."

"I am Federal Agent Evelyn Vance," I said, my voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling. "And this house, Carlisle Logistics, and every single cent currently funding that suit on your back belongs to the Vance Family Irrevocable Living Trust. Which means, Grant... you are not only an adulterer and a child abuser. You are an intruder."
