Chapter 3 - The Fortress Collapses

The sirens arrived six minutes later—not the high-pitched wails of local police cruisers, but the heavy, low-frequency rumbles of three blacked-out federal SUVs that tore up the cobblestone driveway and locked down the perimeter of the Vance estate.
Within thirty seconds, six heavily armed Federal Marshals in full tactical gear breached the front entryway, their weapons trained on the interior space.
"Clear!" the lead agent barked, moving smoothly across the marble.
Marcus Brody stepped through the doorway, his tall, weathered frame imposing against the morning light. He took in the shattered glass, Grant gasping on the floor, Vanessa huddled behind the sofa in my bathrobe, and me holding a bruised, terrified child.
"Evelyn," Marcus said, his eyes softening as he looked at Lily. "The medic is right behind me."
A female paramedic rushed inside with a pediatric trauma kit. I gently sat on the stairs, keeping Lily wrapped in my arms while the medic checked her vitals, her wrists, and the severe bruising along her lower back.
"Severe dehydration, physical contusions consistent with blunt force impact, and acute psychological shock," the medic reported, her voice trembling with anger as she looked at Grant. "Agent Vance, she needs to go to the hospital immediately for a full forensic medical exam."
"Take her," I said, kissing Lily’s forehead. "I'll be right behind you."
"No! Mommy, don't leave!" Lily shrieked, her tiny fingers digging into my tactical vest with terrifying strength. "Don't go away again!"
My heart broke into a thousand pieces. I looked at Marcus. "Get the legal seizure team in here now. I am revoking Grant Carlisle's access to all trust assets, bank accounts, and properties effective immediately."
"You can't do that!" Grant yelled, pushing himself up from the glass-covered rug, blood seeping through the back of his navy suit jacket. "I'm her father! I have parental rights! I have power of attorney over the company!"
Marcus stepped up to Grant, placing a massive, gloved hand squarely against Grant's chest, shoving him back down. "Mr. Carlisle, you are currently under investigation for felony child endangerment, corporate embezzlement of federal trust funds, and domestic abuse. Your power of attorney was revoked three hours ago when Agent Vance signed her operational discharge papers."
Vanessa began to cry hysterically, clutching the silk robe around her. "I have nothing to do with this! I was just invited here! I didn't know anything about a trust!"
"You're wearing my stolen clothing," I said, standing up and walking down the stairs until I was inches from her face. "You put your heel on my daughter's hand. You told her I was dead. You are going to face every single legal consequence I can buy with my fortune, Vanessa. By the time my lawyers are finished with you, you won't even own the shoes on your feet."
Vanessa looked at Grant, hoping for protection, but Grant was staring at the floor, realizing that his entire life—his status, his wealth, his prestige—had been obliterated in less than twenty minutes.

"Take them into custody," Marcus ordered the agents. "Hold them at the federal staging area until the state prosecutor arrives."
As the agents handcuffed Grant and Vanessa, dragging them out into the cold morning air, I walked out to the ambulance where the medics were wrapping Lily in a warm blankets. I climbed into the back, pulling my daughter into my lap, and held her as the doors closed, leaving the mansion behind.
