Chapter 9 - The Homecoming Invitation

Two months passed, and the hot summer air turned into a beautiful, crisp autumn breeze that rustled the golden leaves of the Whitmore estate.
Lily was completely recovered, her cheeks a healthy, vibrant pink as she ran across the soft green turf of the backyard, chasing Lucas and Owen in a wild game of tag. Her laughter carried through the open windows of the mansion like beautiful music.
Claire stood in the grand kitchen, wearing a comfortable linen dress, humming a familiar melody as she flipped golden pancakes on the stove.
Nathan walked into the room, wearing a casual sweater and jeans—a look he wore much more often now that he spent his afternoons working from his home office. He walked up behind her, gently wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
"The boys want to know if we can go to the apple orchard this weekend," Nathan whispered, kissing the side of her neck.
"I think that sounds perfect," Claire smiled, leaning back against his chest. She turned around in his embrace, her eyes softening as she looked at the man who had transformed her entire world. "Mr. Whitmore... I mean, Nathan... my medical release cleared today. My strength is completely back. I should probably speak to the new estate manager about setting up my cleaning schedule again."

Nathan chuckled, a slow, deep sound that made her heart flutter. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet box.
"I don't think the estate manager can hire you, Claire," Nathan said softly, opening the box to reveal a stunning, brilliant sapphire ring surrounded by a halo of diamonds. "Because I'm officially eliminating the housekeeper position. I'm looking to fill a much more permanent role."
