Chapter 5 - The Awakening
The next morning, the sun streamed through the large windows of the VIP pavilion at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Claire’s eyelids fluttered, her vision slowly clearing as she looked around the luxurious, quiet room.
She panicked instantly. She saw the private bathroom, the elegant leather chairs, the state-of-the-art monitors, and thought she had been taken to a celebrity clinic by mistake. She tried to pull the IV lines from her arm, her heart rate spiking on the monitor.
"Easy, Claire. Don't move."
A hand gently but firmly caught her wrist, stopping her.
Claire looked up, her breath catching as she saw Nathan Whitmore sitting in the armchair beside her bed. He had taken off his suit jacket, his sleeves rolled up, his dark hair slightly messy as if he hadn't slept all night.
"Mr... Mr. Whitmore," Claire stammered, her voice a dry, raspy scratch. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I collapsed on your property. Please... please don't fire me. I need the hours. I can work today, I promise. I just need some water."
"Claire, stop," Nathan said, his voice surprisingly gentle as he poured a glass of water and held it to her lips, helping her take a sip. "You’re not working today. Or next week. Or next month."
Claire’s eyes instantly filled with tears of pure terror. "Please, sir... you don't understand. My daughter, Lily... she needs her medicine. If I don't pay the rent by Friday, the landlord will evict us. I have nowhere else to go."
"Your rent has already been paid for the next year, Claire," Nathan said calmly, pulling a document from his pocket and laying it on her tray table. "And your daughter isn't in Queens."
Claire’s face went entirely pale. "What did you do to my baby?"

Before Nathan could answer, the door to the room pushed open. Lily came running in, her little face bright with joy, followed closely by Lucas and Owen.
"Mommy!" Lily cried, climbing onto the edge of the bed and throwing her arms around Claire’s neck. "Look! Daddy Nathan bought me a giant plush pony, and we had pancakes with strawberries for breakfast!"
