Chapter 7 - The Master Surgeon

Three weeks passed.

Claire had been discharged from the hospital and moved permanently into the primary guest suite of the Whitmore estate. Under Nathan’s strict orders, her only "job" was to eat three nutritious meals a day, rest in the garden, and spend time with Lily and the twins.

A team of professional private chefs and medical nurses had been hired to handle the household logistics, allowing the mansion to finally feel like a vibrant, living home instead of a corporate fortress.

On a beautiful, warm June morning, Nathan walked into the sun-drenched sunroom, where Claire was reading a book to the three children.

"Claire, I need you to pack a small bag for Lily," Nathan said, a brilliant smile breaking across his handsome face. "We have an appointment at New York Presbyterian at two o'clock."

Claire stood up, her brow furrowing with anxiety. "An appointment? Mr. Whitmore, I told you, my insurance won't cover Dr. Sterling's clinic. He’s the top pediatric cardiologist in the country. His waiting list is two years long."

"It was two years long," Nathan smiled, stepping closer and handing her a signed, notarized medical authorization form. "But yesterday afternoon, the Whitmore Foundation made a four-million-dollar endowment to the hospital's pediatric research wing. In exchange, Dr. Sterling has agreed to perform Lily’s corrective heart surgery tomorrow morning. The entire cost, including post-operative care and therapy, has been fully covered."

Claire stared at the document, her hands shaking violently. The heavy, suffocating mountain of debt that had been crushing the life out of her for four years was suddenly wiped clean in a single sentence.

"You... you paid for her surgery?" Claire whispered, her voice cracking with a wave of overwhelming emotion.

"I told you, Claire," Nathan said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a depth of feeling he hadn't allowed himself to experience since his wife's passing. "Nobody in this house is disappearing. Lily is going to get her new heart, and she’s going to run across that front gate with my boys for the next fifty years."

Claire fell into his arms, sobbing with a deep, profound relief. Nathan held her tightly, his arms wrapping around her waist, realizing that in saving this small family, he had finally saved himself from the cold, dark isolation of his own wealth.
