Chapter 6 - A Promised Future

Six months later.
The morning sun flooded the master suite of the penthouse, turning the grey Manhattan skyline into a canvas of bright gold and clear blue.
The Duca family had fully transitioned away from its dark past. With the Moretti syndicate permanently dismantled and federal agreements signed, Alessandro had converted all his holdings into a legitimate global enterprise.
Inside the vast living room, eight-month-old Mia—now fourteen months old—was taking her wobbly, triumphant first steps across the white marble floor, giggling wildly as she chased a tiny golden retriever puppy.
Elena sat on the leather sofa, wearing a ivory silk dress, watching her daughter with tears of pure joy in her eyes.
Alessandro stepped out from his private study, wearing a tailored navy suit. He didn't look like a feared mob boss anymore; he looked like a man who had finally found his peace.
He walked over to Elena, sitting beside her and pulling her gently against his chest. She rested her head against his shoulder, wrapping her arms around his waist.
"She’s getting fast," Alessandro chuckled, watching Mia fall onto her padded bottom on the cashmere rug before scrambling back up.
"She learned from her father," Elena teased softly, looking up into his dark eyes.
Alessandro’s heart swelled. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.
Elena’s breath caught in her throat.
Alessandro turned toward her, taking her hand in his. "Eight months ago, a tiny girl crawled through my door and stole my tie. And then her mother walked into my life and stole everything else."
He opened the box, revealing a flawless, emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the sunlight in a dazzling display of light.
"You spent months hiding in the dark, Elena," Alessandro said, his voice deep, rich, and filled with unyielding devotion. "I want to spend the rest of my life bringing you into the light. Will you marry me?"
Tears spilled over Elena’s cheeks, but her smile was as bright as the morning sun. "Yes," she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Alessandro! A thousand times yes!"
Alessandro pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss, holding her tight against his heart.
Mia came waddling over to the sofa, dragging her tiny feet, babbling happily as she pulled herself up against Alessandro’s leg. She reached out with her small fist and wrapped her fingers tightly around his brand-new silk tie.
Alessandro broke the kiss, looked down at the little girl who had saved his soul, and laughed out loud—a rich, happy sound that echoed through the penthouse walls.

He dropped to his knee, picking Mia up in one arm and pulling Elena close with the other.
The laundry room was far behind them. The shadows were gone. In their place stood a real home, an unbroken promise, and a love that would protect them forever.
