Chapter 2 - The East Wing

By four o'clock that afternoon, Elena’s meager life had been upended.

She sat on the edge of a velvet armchair inside the penthouse’s east wing guest suite—a room larger than her entire former apartment, complete with a fireplace, private balcony, and a marble bathroom. A brand-new Italian-made crib sat near the window, alongside boxes of premium formula, organic baby food, and high-end clothing that had arrived via private courier two hours prior.

Mia was sprawling happily on a plush cashmere rug, chewing on a silver rattle that had belonged to the Duca family for generations.

Elena felt like an intruder in a golden cage.

A quiet knock echoed against the heavy mahogany door. Alessandro stepped inside, having changed into a dark sweater and trousers. The cold businessman was gone, replaced by a man who looked deep in thought.

"Is the room acceptable?" he asked, walking over to the window.

"Mr. Duca, this is too much," Elena said, standing up. "I don't understand. Why are you doing this? I broke your rules. I lied to you for three months."

Alessandro stared out at the rain-slicked city. "Nine years ago, my brother, Marco, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Brooklyn during our turf war with the Moretti cartel. His wife died six months later from grief. They had a daughter—a little girl named Sofia."

Elena held her breath, listening to the rare vulnerability in his voice.

"I tried to protect Sofia," Alessandro continued, his jaw tightening. "I kept her in a safehouse with six armed guards. But I was young, arrogant, and focused on revenge. I didn't realize that guards could be bought. The Morettis found her. They took her."

His eyes flicked back to Elena, dark and hollow with an ancient, unbearable pain.

"I spent three years tearing New York apart looking for my niece. By the time I found the location where they held her... it was too late. She had succumbed to fever. I swore that day that no child under my roof would ever suffer or be forced into hiding."

Elena’s heart bled for him. The feared mob boss wasn't a monster; he was a broken guardian carrying a ghost.

"I didn't know," Elena whispered softly.

"You hid Mia in a laundry room because you were afraid of the world, Elena," Alessandro said, taking a step toward her. "And because you were afraid of me. I cannot undo the fear I inspire in people, but I will not allow a child to live behind soap bottles in my home."

Before Elena could answer, the apartment’s security intercom buzzed loudly. Matteo’s tense voice crackled over the speaker.

"Boss, we have a situation downstairs. Victor Moretti just pulled up to the building in an armored sedan. He’s demanding to come up. He claims he has information regarding our dock shipments."

Alessandro’s expression flattened into pure steel. The gentle uncle vanished; the king of the New York underworld returned.

"Tell Victor he has two minutes to state his business in the lobby," Alessandro ordered coldly. "And tell Raymond to lock the private elevators."

He looked at Elena. "Stay in this room. Do not open the door for anyone except me or Matteo."

"Alessandro—" Elena called out, using his first name for the first time without realizing it. "Be careful."

Alessandro paused at the doorway. He looked back at her, a faint, ghost of a smile touching his lips. "In this city, Elena, people should be careful of me."
