Chapter 4 - A Whisper of War

For two weeks, the penthouse became a sanctuary amid an impending storm.
Elena stopped cleaning. Instead, she found herself sitting across from Alessandro at his grand dining table every evening, sharing meals cooked by private chefs. Mia had taken a complete liking to the mob boss—she would crawl over to his chair during breakfast, babbling cheerfully until Alessandro set aside his financial reports to pick her up.
To the outside world, Alessandro Duca was a ruthless criminal mastermind. To Elena, he was a man who carefully double-checked the temperature of Mia’s milk and bought three different types of plush toys because he wasn't sure which color infants preferred.
"You're smiling," Alessandro noticed one evening as they sat on the terrace, watching the city lights blink below.
"I was just thinking about how ridiculous this is," Elena admitted, pulling her cardigan tight against the cool night breeze. "A month ago, I was terrified you'd find out about Mia. Now she sleeps in a nursery that costs more than my entire home back in Ohio."
Alessandro looked at her, his dark eyes reflecting the warm golden light of the patio lanterns. "Why did you leave Ohio, Elena?"
Elena looked down at her hands. "Mia’s father. He was... an ambitious man with a bad temper. When I got pregnant, he told me to get rid of her. When I refused, he made it clear that if I stayed in Ohio, he would take her from me using his family’s political connections. So I packed one bag, took my savings, and caught a bus to New York."
Alessandro’s hand clenched around his crystal glass until his knuckles turned white. "What is his name?"
"It doesn't matter," Elena said softly, reaching out to gently touch his arm. "He doesn't know where we are. We're safe here."
"You are safer than you know," Alessandro said, his hand sliding over hers, his warm fingers wrapping around her small wrist.
The silence between them stretched, charged with an intensity that had nothing to do with danger or fear. Elena looked into his eyes and felt her breath catch in her throat. She realized, with a sudden, dizzying clarity, that she was falling in love with a man the rest of the world feared.
Suddenly, the terrace doors burst open. Matteo sprinted out, his face pale, holding a satellite phone.
"Boss! It's the Brooklyn warehouse!" Matteo yelled. "Moretti’s men just launched a firebomb attack on the docks! Three of our men are hit! They’re moving toward the west bridge!"
Alessandro stood up instantly, releasing Elena’s hand. "Get the strike team ready."
"Alessandro, wait!" Elena cried out, grabbing his sleeve. "It’s a trap! What if they want you to leave the penthouse?!"

Alessandro looked at her, his face setting into stone. "They burned my warehouse, Elena. If I don't respond, they will come here next. I have to finish this tonight."
He reached out, cupping her cheek with his large, warm hand, his thumb gently stroking her skin. "I will come back to you. I promise."
